Barrelling out of Chicago with the sort of unhinged lunacy normally reserved for the most throat shredding and finger callousing ends of Finnish hardcore comes Stress Positions. Formed in the year of shelter-in-place (2020), featuring former members of C.H.E.W. and led by firebrand frontmanic Stephanie Brooks, the band are about to follow up their Harsh Reality full-length with and EP entitled Human Zoo. The EP is set for release on the 16th and features new tunes as well as remixes by Planet B and Made by Human Hands. The band’s bio unashamedly describes them as “remaining anti-colonialist and anti-capitalist, amongst the many other things that fall into these frameworks. Topics addressed on this release include draconian abortion laws, washed up comedians who can’t cope with a changing world, the long-lasting effects of Western colonialism, the Israeli genocide, subjugation and occupation of the Palestinian people and their lands, Right Wing military indoctrination, and being a person of color in a white-dominated subculture.”
Says guitarist Ben Rudolph about “Salbahe Ako,” the track we’re premiering today: “The title translates to “I’m savage” in Tagalog and deals with being a woman of color in a white hegemonic subculture. The opening lines to the tune really set the tone: “Behold my form and quake in fear. Am I the only brown one here? Tell me how you value my perspective. I get off on putting myself where I don’t belong.” Musically, this is a fitting closing track for the record as it is relentless throughout. We tried to push ourselves on this one in trying do some things we haven’t in the past. A medley of noise rock, hardcore and death metal all rolled into one.”
Check ‘em out in the Chicago area on May 11 at the Bottom lounge w/ Converge, Big Laugh and Hell is Real.
