Track Premiere: Gawthrop – ‘Jimmy’

South Korean sludge crushers Gawthrop have been bouncing around the underground since 2018, releasing a series of splits, demos and EPs that established them as a truly nasty band. Seven years after forming, they’re ready to unleash their first full-length on the world in the form of Kuboa and Decibel has an exclusive premiere of the newest track, “Jimmy.”

From the rip, “Jimmy” is very, very heavy. Gawthrop instantly recall the likes of Corrupted, Noothgrush and Meth Drinker, imbuing their brand of downtuned, blown-out sludge with a sense of hopeless nihilism. Noisy, chugging guitars and tortured, reverbed-out vocals follow the drums like a hopeless death march, harkening back to the genre’s early pioneers.

As Gawthrop tell Decibel, the timing of writing and recording played a major role in the oppressive sound on display:

Kuboa was written and recorded during the COVID lockdown. With everyday routines disrupted and the status quo disintegrated, our weekly practice sessions were one of the few things that gave us a sense of normality. The music, in some way, reflects the claustrophobic, surreal quality of the city we experienced it at the time.”

Speaking more specifically about “Jimmy,” Gawthrop tell Decibel the song is a re-recording of a track on their three-way split, Far East Nihilism Front.

“After our first demo, we wrote a series of songs based on names that were more compact and direct. ‘Jimmy’ came from those sessions. It remains one of our favorite tracks to play but it was previously only available on a split EP. We decided to re-record Jimmy so that more people can get to know him.”
