You probably wouldn’t expect a band featuring current and former members of All Pigs Must Die, The Red Chord and Cable to sound like Black Sabbath, but that’s exactly what you get with Bloodhorse and their new tune, “Saboteur.”
Bloodhorse have been quiet since releasing last album Horizoner in 2009 but they announced new album A Maligned Star late last month, alongside a stream of the title track. “Saboteur” is the second new song from the album.
“The song was built from Matt [Wood]’s bass riffs and written around a structure of imagined vocals, since there weren’t any yet,” explains drummer Alex Garcia-Rivera. “We just jammed on it until it felt right. If I remember correctly, the first time we heard the vocals was when we recorded them. Same with the guitar solo: Adam took home a rough mix and a month or so later, he had solos written for the whole album. We record and mix all analog, and I self-engineered the drums while also playing them, which makes punching-in impossible. Because of this, the drums you hear on the song are one complete performance from start to finish, but we prefer it that way anyways.
“Our collective influences as a band are Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd, but I think in some ways it comes out sounding like early Metallica or something. Like, maybe we sound like we do because we have the same influences as other bands in our genre, not because we are influenced BY other bands in our genre.
“It’s such a departure from our previous bands, but not really intentionally. We just wanted to create something that we connected with at the time; a little more directly related to our influences from when we first got into music in the first place.”
Guitarist/vocalist Adam Wentworth adds: “It became pretty obvious that this would be the first song on the release once it was finished. Aptly named to tribute the fifth black sabbath album and if you’ve had any experience with self-doubt and sabotage, then this is for you.”
You can listen to “Saboteur” and the first single below. A Malign Star is out on May 30 via Iodine Recordings.
