Taylor Swift will keep her new album off streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music for at least the first week of release, according to multiple sources. But even without a streaming boost, she is still on track to deliver the biggest debut of the year.
Most anticipate streaming will be allowed in week two, but admit that details are still being negotiated, according to Bloomberg. Swift has long been a vocal critic of streaming services, particularly Spotify’s free ad-supported tier.
But even without streaming, “Reputation” is on track to become the biggest debut so far this year.
Her label, Big Machine Records, told The Associated Press on Friday that pre-orders for the new album were more than 400,000, double the pre-orders for Swift’s “1989” album a week prior to its release. Fan pre-orders have been driven by online promotions with Target, WalMart, Amazon and on Swift’s own web site; and Target says “Reputation” is its largest music presale ever.
Taylor Swift’s last three albums sold more than a million copies each in their debut week.
