ANTHRAX Celebrates 35th Anniversary Of ‘Spreading The Disease’ With Quarantine Version Of ‘Gung-Ho’
In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the release of ANTHRAX’s second studio LP, “Spreading The Disease”, the five members of the band recently came together to record a quarantine version of the album track “Gung-Ho”.
Drummer Charlie Benante uploaded the video to his YouTube channel and wrote in an accompanying message: “In honor of Our Spreading the Disease album having a Birthday, we decided to Thrash this one out. Hope ya dig it!”
Produced by ANTHRAX with Carl Canedy, the 44-minute “Spreading The Disease” marked the first ANTHRAX album to feature singer Joey Belladonna and bassist Frank Bello (joining drummer Benante and guitarists Dan Spitz and Scott Ian), and set into motion the core elements that would become the essence of ANTHRAX. In addition, the album also introduced the ANTHRAX writing partnership of Benante and Ian (that eventually evolved into Benante, Ian and Bello).
For Bello, “Spreading The Disease” was his full-on album recording baptism. Only 18 at the time, he hadn’t yet fully realized his own style of playing, but over the course of the sessions, he developed it. “You can hear all of my influences on every song, Steve Harris, Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler, all of them.” Bello said. He remembered that “Spreading The Disease” didn’t quite come of age until later on, but it was definitely “simmering.” “What we were doing was so fresh, so different — we had heavy songs with these great, melodic vocals — and eventually, people caught on and loved what we were doing. I think every song on ‘Spreading The Disease’ still stands up today,” he said.
“Spreading The Disease” represented a turning point in rock. It came during a time when the landscape was transitioning from the “hair band scene” to a new composite of metal, punk and hardcore — thrash metal. The album was compelling and utterly fresh to the 1985 music fan with its speedy rhythms, savage riffs, blistering solos, punishing drum work and a killer melodic performance by Belladonna. Unlike the thrash bands sprouting up on the west coast that focused on speed, ANTHRAX’s focus was on catchiness, hooks, and a hot and sweaty, New York mosh sensibility. And it wasn’t just the music that was morphing, it was a whole new culture that was being birthed. And ANTHRAX, along with METALLICA, SLAYER and MEGADETH, was right at its nucleus.
“Spreading The Disease” contains several ANTHRAX standouts: “A.I.R.”, with its great riffs and abundance of melody, “Madhouse”, a testament to the band’s top-notch song-writing skills that showcased their grasp of melody, and “Armed And Dangerous”, a soulful ballad with its singalong chorus and spine-tingling performance by Belladonna. “Aftershock” is probably the album’s punkiest song with its blistering guitar solo, and the closer, “Gung-Ho”, with its out-and-out speed-kills blitzkrieg, is a superb piece of thrash metal.
“We didn’t know what we were doing, but we totally knew what we were doing,” said Ian. “I know that doesn’t make sense, but it’s where we were at, a bunch of 21-year-old kids making our major label debut on a shoestring budget with nothing but a dream and a bunch of songs that we thought killed. We were right and our dream came true. Thank you to all the fans that put this record and ANTHRAX on the map way back when and still support us today.”
The 30th-anniversary edition of “Spreading The Disease” was made available in November 2015 via Universal.

MATT SORUM Looks Back On His First Concert As Drummer Of GUNS N’ ROSES: ‘It Was Intense’
In a recent interview with RIVAL SONS’ Michael Miley for the Gretsch YouTube channel, Matt Sorum reflected on his first performance as the drummer for GUNS N’ ROSES, which took place in January 1991 at the Rock In Rio festival in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
He said (see video below): “My whole career has been like flying by the seat of my pants. I’ve dealt with these guys that are very interesting characters, and you learn to love ’em, but at the time, you’re, like, ‘What the hell is going on out here?’
“Here I am rehearsing with GUNS N’ ROSES for our first show, where I’m gonna open with the band at Rock In Rio — my first introduction to the world. So I joined, and we started working on these [‘Use Your Illusion’] records, and then we got a call to go play two nights in Rock In Rio headlining. JUDAS PRIEST was opening for us, MEGADETH one night. The bill was crazy, but we were headliners. A hundred-and-forty-thousand-seat stadiums, two nights sold out for GUNS N’ ROSES. And I get there, and I’ve never rehearsed with Axl [Rose, GUNS N’ ROSES singer] — I’ve never rehearsed with the guy. We’re gonna do it live in front of a hundred and forty thousand people, plus on television. And I’m freaking out before the show. I’m looking around, and I’m, like, ‘Hey, does anyone know what the setlist is? I’d like to check out the setlist.’ And Slash [GUNS N’ ROSES guitarist] goes, ‘We don’t use a setlist.’ And I’m, like, ‘What?’ So I got no information about what’s gonna go down.”
He continued: “Basically, before the show, and I learned this happened with that band, every night, Axl’s guy Earl Gabbidon, [who] basically took care of Axl, came over to me and said, ‘We’re gonna start with ‘Welcome To The Jungle’,’ ‘We’re gonna start with ‘Nightrain’.’ He would tell me every night. So that whole ‘Use Your Illusion’ tour, there was never a setlist. And we figured out how to give each other eye signals, or someone took a riff, but we figured it out. And here we were on a stadium-sized stage. But that particular night at Rock In Rio, we started with a song no one ever heard before called ‘Pretty Tied Up’, which we just finished recording. And it started with the hi-hat. And I just remember looking out, and the crowd was already bouncing. I was, like, ‘I’m only playing the hi-hat.’ [Laughs] You felt that when they bounce and the stage is kind of rolling. It was intense. And I was, like, ‘Fasten your seatbelt, man. This shit’s gonna get crazy.’ And it did. But that one of the highlights — just the beginning of it.”
Sorum, who replaced Steven Adler in GUNS N’ ROSES, recorded the highly successful albums “Use Your Illusion I” and “Use Your Illusion II” (both 1991) and “The Spaghetti Incident” (1994). He also supported the group on the “Use Your Illusion” tour and can be heard on GUNS N’ ROSES’ “Live Era: ’87-’93” (1999) and “Greatest Hits” (2004).
Sorum has said in the past that a GUNS reunion tour should have included both him and Adler, with each playing the songs they recorded with the group. Sorum was inducted as a member of the band into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April 2012.
Sorum’s autobiography, “Double Talkin’ Jive: True Rock ‘N’ Roll Stories From The Drummer Of Guns N’ Roses, The Cult, And Velvet Revolver”, which was previously due in April and was subsequently pushed back to early July, will now arrive in 2021.

KING DIAMOND Instagram Filter Now Available
King Diamond has released a new Instagram filter which allows fans to appear as though they’re wearing the legendary Danish heavy metal singer’s face paint. Several fans have already posted selfies using the photo-editing tool, as seen in various tweets below.
Asked in a 2019 interview with Kerrang! magazine where the idea for his makeup came from, King said: “It started with Peter Gabriel. I’d seen photos of Alice Cooper, but it was when I saw GENESIS live that I thought, ‘If I do something, I have to have a show to go with the music.’ I saw Alice the next year, in 1975, and that blew my mind.”
King also confirmed that KISS bassist Gene Simmons once threatened to sue him over the makeup. “They said, ‘Your makeup is getting too close, you know,’ which I never thought it was. I don’t think they were ever threatened by anything we did. I think it was a business move, because they could get some good publicity out of saying, ‘Hey, this is copyrighted.’ And it was, I saw the patents, but I still didn’t think what I was doing looked anything like what they were doing. Gene Simmons is very smart when it comes to business, and I think it was a business decision.”
In a 2017 interview with “Talk Is Jericho”, Gene defended his decision to send King a cease-and-desist letter over the makeup, saying: “The letter is cheaper than testing us in court. We’ve never lost a case. By the way, I’m a fan. I liked his stuff; I thought he was doing cool stuff. Make up your own stuff. Don’t come into my house unless you’re invited.”
King recently confirmed that he is hard at work not only on the new album from his namesake band, but also the first LP in the 21st century from the reformed MERCYFUL FATE.
KING DIAMOND received a Grammy nomination in the “Best Metal Performance” category for the track “Never Ending Hill” off the band’s last album, 2007’s “Give Me Your Soul … Please”.
KING DIAMOND released a DVD/Blu-ray, “Songs For The Dead Live”, in January 2019 via Metal Blade Records. The set captures 1987’s seminal “Abigail” album in its entirety, twice, and in very different locales: Belgium’s Graspop Metal Meeting in June 2016 and Philadelphia’s Fillmore in November 2015. The performances feature KING DIAMOND’s current band, comprising of guitarists La Rocque and Mike Wead, bassist Pontus Egberg and drummer Matt Thompson.
MERCYFUL FATE’s last studio album, “9”, was released in 1999.

KORN Bassist’s STILLWELL Releases ‘Could’ve Sworn’ Music Video
“Could’ve Sworn”, the new AhrenEye-directed music video from STILLWELL, the band featuring KORN bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu, vocalist/guitarist Anthony “Q-Unique” Quiles and P.O.D. drummer Noah “Wuv” Bernardo, can be seen below. The song is taken from STILLWELL’s third album, “Supernatural Miracle”, which was released in September.
“Supernatural Miracle” finds STILLWELL reconciling its eclectic and storied musical backgrounds, and highlighting the similarities between each member’s celebrated careers.
“With this new album, STILLWELL sounds like one band instead of past albums where it feels like three or four different bands,” Bernardo explains. “With Q on guitar, it enabled us to be more cohesive with sound and direction.”
“We intentionally made sure to not sound like the other bands we’re a part of, out of respect, integrity and just wanting to push ourselves creatively,” says Arvizu. “If people want to hear KORN, P.O.D. or the 10 bands Q works with, they can just listen to those, STILLWELL is its own thing. We put together what I think is our best work yet.”
Drawing on STILLWELL’s past albums — “Raise It Up” (2015) and “Dirtbag” (2011) — “Supernatural Miracle” serves as the culmination of years’ worth of finding their voice. With this release, these musical legends are sure to give you a fresh new look at who they are apart from their histories, but together as a collective.
“I feel like this album was a major crossroad for all of us,” says Q-Unique. “Wuv and Fieldy gave me the space to step up with the guitar, and then to have the opportunity to write these songs together was extremely surreal for me. It’s one of the reasons why we called the album ‘Supernatural Miracle’. To make a long story short, everything fell into place, from writing, recording, schedules, videos and artwork. This album has been a smooth journey.”

Rockers React To Passing Of SEAN CONNERY
David Coverdale (WHITESNAKE), Gavin Rossdale(BUSH), Gary Holt (EXODUS, SLAYER), WARRANT, Jason Bonham, John Corabi (ex-MÖTLEY CRÜE) and Vernon Reid (LIVING COLOUR) are among the rockers who have reacted on social media to the passing of Sean Connery. The Scottish actor, who was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, died Friday night (October 30) at the age of 90.
Connery appeared in seven Bond films and won an Oscar in 1988 for his role in “The Untouchables”. Other notable roles included those in “The Hunt for Red October”, “Highlander”, “Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade” and “The Rock”.
Sean died peacefully in his sleep in the Bahamas. His son Jason Connery said his father “had many of his family who could be in the Bahamas around him” when he died in Nassau. He added: “We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time. A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor.”
The actor’s publicist Nancy Seltzer said: “There will be a private ceremony followed by a memorial yet to be planned once the virus has ended.”
Sean is survived by wife Micheline and sons Jason and Stephane.

DAVID COVERDALE Attributes Some Of WHITESNAKE’s Success To Lyrics About ‘Human Themes’
In a new interview with Joe Rock of Long Island’s rock station 102.3 WBAB, WHITESNAKE frontman David Coverdale was asked about the apparent lack of humor in the band’s lyrics. David responded: “Well, it’s interesting, because particularly now, I’m very active on social media. I know, just from e-mails that we receive and positive messages, a lot of the stuff I post puts a much-needed smile or gives somebody a laugh or touches a nerve. I’ve always been a proponent of meditation. Although I don’t preach it, I encourage people that it would be helpful to them during this very challenging time.
“And that’s the other reason that Rhino and I said, ‘Let’s go ahead with our plan for the ‘Red, White And Blue’ trilogy.’ Everybody’s gonna need glasses, prescription lenses, after so much of Netflix, so let’s give ’em some ear candy. But they’re all true songs.
“One of the reasons, I think, WHITESNAKE has maintained a great deal of success is they’re all human themes,” Coverdale explained. “They’re all physical and emotional themes, and, of course, ultimately search for direction, as you know, in ‘Here I Go Again’: ‘I don’t know where I’m going, but I sure know where I’ve been.’ Once again, that song, the lyrics resonate deeply with many, many people. It’s fantastic.”
WHITESNAKE recently launched the “Red, White And Blue” trilogy, a series of fresh, new collections organized by musical themes that will include “Love Songs” (red), “The Rock Album” (white) and “The Blues Album” (blue).
A few weeks ago, Coverdale underwent surgery for bilateral inguinal hernia. The singer was forced to wait several months during the coronavirus pandemic before having the procedure done last month at the Renown facility in his hometown of Reno, Nevada.
Coverdale had both his knees replaced with titanium in 2017 after suffering from degenerative arthritis. He later explained that he was in so much pain with arthritis in his knees that it hampered his ability to perform live.
WHITESNAKE had been touring in support of its latest album, “Flesh & Blood”, which was released in May 2019 via Frontiers Music Srl.

Fan Creates SLIPKNOT Concert Experience In His Front Yard
According to the Daily Hampshire Gazette, a man in Easthampton, England has used the coronavirus downtime to create a SLIPKNOT concert experience in the front yard of his home.
Tim Young created his SLIPKNOT display by welding together the frames for nine mannequins out of steel pipes. So far, the 41-year-old plumber and father of four has put on six “shows,” featuring four to five songs from each of SLIPKNOT’s earlier albums, followed by a performance of the band’s latest LP, “We Are Not Your Kind”, in its entirety. Each show is augmented by laser lights, smoke machines and strobe lights.
“It’s filling a void for me” during the pandemic, he said.
Young, who has seen SLIPKNOT band 11 times, starting at Ozzfest in 1999, said that he has “a very supportive family” and added that his neighbors have been “pretty cool” about his SLIPKNOT display.
When he attended SLIPKNOT’s show in Iowa last year, Young brought his daughter Jacqueline and son Liam. His wife bought the tickets.
Earlier this year, SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor told The Irish Times that the band’s fans who were teenagers or in their early 20s when the group’s debut album came out are still coming to SLIPKNOT shows. “Absolutely, but they are in the seats now,” he said. “They are not in the pit. I don’t blame them. I haven’t been in a mosh pit since 1997. It’s insane. They are bringing their kids and their kids go in the pit. They get it. I have run into a bunch of fathers and mothers who come to meet and greet with their kids. The fathers are just so nervous. It’s great to watch them watch their kids and know that they are passing it down. They recognize that same passion.”

MORDRED To Release First Full-Length Album In Over 25 Years, ‘The Dark Parade’, In The Spring
The acclaimed and influential crossover thrash band MORDRED has signed with M-Theory Audio. The group will release “The Dark Parade” — its first full-length record in over 25 years — in the spring of 2021.
MORDRED was formed in 1984 as the burgeoning San Francisco Bay Area thrash scene was beginning its rise to global prominence. While mosh-inducing thrash formed the basic blueprint of their sound, MORDRED stood out as a unique presence thanks to their integration of funk-infused musicianship and hip-hop influences. The group was one of the first bands to explore those diversities in extremes, but as the dexterous bass performance of Art Liboon and innovative turntable work from band collaborator Aaron “DJ Pause” Vaughn provided a new spin on the thrash metal genre, MORDRED retained their metallic bark thanks to groove-laden shred from guitarists Danny White and James Sanguinetti, and energetic shout-along choruses spearheaded by vocalist Scott Holderby. That combination of thrash metal and exploratory soul powered three full-lengths on Noise Records between 1989 and 1994, from their revered debut “Fool’s Game” to their even more eclectic sophomore follow-up “In This Life” through their final — until now — record, “The Next Room”.
MORDRED formally reunited in 2013 for live performances, but outside of the release of lone single, “The Baroness”, in 2015, fans would have to wait for new music until this past summer. Longtime fans of the band were finally satiated with the June 2020 release of the four-song EP “Volition”. The new songs saw the band — which now consists of five-sixths of the classic lineup, plus new drummer Jeff Gomes (formerly of FUNGO MUNGO and MIRV) — reviving the sounds that led them to become cult favorites 30 years ago. The group recently released a music video for “Not For You”, the lead-off track from “Volition”.
The “Volition” EP is only a small taste of things to come from the revitalized MORDRED, as the band has finished recording “The Dark Parade”, and is currently completing the LP mix.
“I’m excited to announce the signing of MORDRED,” says M-Theory Audio label founder Marco Barbieri. “The band is legendary to me from reading about their early demos, to witnessing the group live at my first Bay Area club show after moving to California in ’87, to following their signing and releases via Noise Records.
“MORDRED were always part of the Bay Area thrash fabric that I love so dearly but took their sound to whole new places creating something fresh and alternative and able to crossover between scenes when no one had the nerve or ingenuity to do so. I was stoked to see them reform and more so when they released new music. I knew that we needed to get involved in a cooperation to bridge the gaps between generations and styles and get their name and music back out there.”
“We’re super-psyched to be active again, and the kind of deal we have with M-Theory lets us maintain control of our music while benefiting from the expertise of Marco’s experience in the industry,” says guitarist Danny White. “It’s the best of both worlds. MORDRED is putting the M-Theory into practice.”
In addition to putting the finishing touches on “The Dark Parade”, MORDRED has also entertained audiences throughout 2020 with their streaming variety show and concert series, “Mordred: Acting The Fool!” where the band collaborates with writer, director, videographer Christian Powell and features live music, interviews, sketch comedy and burlesque performances. The next edition of will stream live on Halloween night. The Halloween broadcast will feature a performance by MORDRED and the debut of music from “The Dark Parade”. The event will also feature guest appearances from guitarist Jude Gold (JEFFERSON STARSHIP), burlesque performer Miss Kitty Oaks and South American thrashers DESASTRE NATURAL, as well as a healthy dose of tomfoolery, shenanigans, skits and shorts to satisfy any desire for the ridiculous and bizarre!
MORDRED is:
Scott Holderby – vocals
Danny White – guitar
James Sanguinetti – guitar
Art Liboon – bass
Aaron “DJ Pause” Vaughn – turntables/keyboards
Jeff Gomes – drums

INSIDIOUS DISEASE Feat. DIMMU BORGIR, Ex-MORGOTH Members: ‘Invisible War’ Music Video
The official music video for “Invisible War”, a new song from INSIDIOUS DISEASE — the old-school death metal project featuring Marc Grewe (vocals; formerly of MORGOTH) and Sven Atle Kopperud (a.k.a. Silenoz; guitar; also of DIMMU BORGIR) — can be seen below. The track is taken from INSIDIOUS DISEASE’s long-awaited sophomore album, “After Death”, which came out on October 30 via Nuclear Blast Records.
The band comments: “The video was shot in an old German World War 2 bunker near Berlin and captures the vibe of this song perfectly. It wasn’t easy to realize the filming under the current circumstances, but we are pleased with the result and the whole filming and production. We really hope you will enjoy this clip and the album… It’s been a long time coming but it’s safe to say we’re excited to share our new art with you! Crank the volume!”
“After Death” track listing:
01. Soul Excavation
02. Betrayer
03. Divine Fire
04. Unguided Immortality
05. Invisible War
06. Born Into Bondage
07. Enforcers Of The Plague
08. An End Date For The World
09. Nefarious Atonement
10. Secret Sorcery
INSIDIOUS DISEASE’s debut album, “Shadowcast”, was released in July 2010 via Century Media Records. The limited-edition first-pressing CD included two bonus tracks (“Insomaniac” plus a blistering cover of DEATH’s classic “Leprosy”).
The recording lineup for “Shadowcast” included Grewe and Kopperud alongside Shane Embury (NAPALM DEATH) on bass, Tony Laureano (ex-DIMMU BORGIR, NILE, ANGELCORPSE) on drums and Jon yvind Andersen (a.k.a. Jardar; OLD MAN’S CHILD) on guitar.
Asked what brought Grewe and Silenoz together to form and create INSIDIOUS DISEASE, the DIMMU BORGIR guitarist said: “The lust and need for the old-school vibe and making music together with like-minded people was what brought us together in the first place. You know, always talking about doing something for the fun of it. For the most part, that never happens; it usually starts and ends with alcohol-infused drunk talk. But I launched it finally together with Jardar and Tony back in ’04. Then we brought Shane along shortly after that before I contacted Marc to see if he would consider doing the vocals. I’ve always been a huge fan of his style and I love others that is in the same vein, like Martin Van Drunen [PESTILENCE, ASPHYX], Jeff Becerra [POSSESSED], Chuck Schuldiner [DEATH], etc. those who have that ‘insane’ feel and honesty in the delivery. They stand out and we didn’t want the typical gurgling, low-end stuff like most bands do, even if that’s cool as well at times it doesn’t do much when identifying a band, it has become such an important thing especially the last 10-15 years. Identity and authenticity are what’s important in music. It doesn’t always have to be ‘groundbreaking,’ ‘new’ or ‘modern’-sounding. A good record is a good record regardless.”
INSIDIOUS DISEASE is:
Marc Grewe (MORGOTH) – Vocals
Sven Atle “Silenoz” Kopperud (DIMMU BORGIR) – Guitar
Terje “Cyrus” Andersen (SUSPERIA) – Guitar
Shane Embury (NAPALM DEATH) – Bass

THY ART IS MURDER Drops Lyric Video For New Single ‘Killing Season’
Australian deathcore masters THY ART IS MURDER have unveiled the lyric video for their new single, “Killing Season”. The song is rooted in the band’s sonic origins with its classic bone-crunching death metal paired with a relentless ferocity that takes a wrecking ball to all in its path.
In keeping with the band’s tradition of shining a floodlight on socio-political trauma and history’s atrocities, the lyrics for “Killing Season” are inspired by the whitewashing of colonialism, and the song tackles the brutal reality of systemic racism in the western world head-on. Written on Thanksgiving 2019, “Killing Season” examines the genesis of the national holiday and its lesser-known bloody history that’s far from the sanitized version celebrated annually.
Guitarist Andy Marsh explains: “‘Killing Season’ is a crushing old school sounding THY ART track that we put together towards the end of 2019, to be used somewhere in 2020 for a release or tour promo. We wanted to release it now as a gift to our fans who have supported us throughout this year by continuing to listen to our music, buying merch, or simply sending us messages of support. It means the world to us! ‘Killing Season’ touches on the darkness surrounding the origins of Thanksgiving, and while that subject is relevant at this time of year, we want you to think of the atrocities both past and present that deserve acknowledgment.”
“Killing Season” is the first taste of new music from the masters of brutality since the release of their earth-scorching fifth record, “Human Target”. Originally intended for another release, THY ART IS MURDER decided to made the track available now to say thank you to all the fans who have stood by them during the global pandemic and the chaos of 2020.
