Devil's Bell – AUDREY HORNE

It may be because they come from Bergen, Norway, rather than anywhere near the Sunset Strip, but AUDREY HORNE have never quite hit the heights that their music seems to demand. Even back on early albums like “Le Fol” (2017) and the Norwegians’ superb self-titled record (2010), they were writing ridiculously memorable and exhilarating hard rock bangers at such an alarming rate that world domination seemed inevitable. A decade or so later, “Devil’s Bell” is yet another album full of songs that deserve to be heard by absolutely fucking everybody, preferably at full blast through a car radio. Maybe this time, the world will pay attention.

AUDREY HORNE are perfectly successful in their own right, of course. Having been so consistent over the years, they are a respected, well-established cornerstone of European hard rock. And yet, “Devil’s Bell” provides a timely reminder that they are a band with certain unique charms, too. Firstly, frontman Toschie has a glorious, distinctive voice: he swaggers and soars his way through these nine songs, exuding mischief and conviction in equal amounts. Secondly, AUDREY HORNE are absolute masters of the audacious classic rock hybrid. These songs borrow from all manner of cherished sources — from CHEAP TRICK, KISS and VAN HALEN, to METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN and ALICE IN CHAINS — but the end result is always something else entirely.

The sheer diversity of the thing is laudable in itself. Opening salvo “Ashes to Ashes” verges on outrageous, as it switches seamlessly from anthemic ’80s vibes to twisted, post-grunge dirge, while also boasting a chorus big enough to flatten a cathedral. Faster and grittier, “Animal” is a high octane, speed metal sing-along, infectious gang vocals included; “Break Out” goes full ’80s OZZY, replete with meandering, psychedelic middle-eight; “Return To Grave Valley” is a rampant, ingenious instrumental with guitarists Ice Dale and Thomas Tofthagen on spectacular form.

Toschie returns in a boisterous mood on “Dance Macabre” — an organ-drenched boogie rock extravaganza with a blissfully uplifting chorus — and the MAIDEN-saluting fire ‘n’ fury of the title track, which may be AUDREY HORNE’s finest single moment to date. Diving further into epic metal territory than ever before, the steady gallop of “All Is Lost” is another standout, while “Toxic Twins” turns the tables once again, via the kind of strutting, punked-up rock ‘n’ roll that the Scandinavians seem to do better than anyone. “Devil’s Bell” concludes with “From Darkness”: a seven-minute labyrinth of street-metal riffing, woozy vocal harmonies and grandiose, hallucinatory detours. It is a startling and unexpected moment on an album that is full of such things. This is classic rock, but AUDREY HORNE style. In many ways, it’s better than the real thing.

ANTHRAX's CHARLIE BENANTE To Release RUSH Tribute EP 'Moving Pitchers' This Weekend

ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante will release a RUSH tribute EP titled “Moving Pitchers” on Saturday, April 23 as part of this year’s Record Store Day.

The five-song EP, whose baseball-themed title is a play on the title of RUSH’s classic 1981 album “Moving Pictures”, is limited to 1,500 copies. It includes two tracks off “Moving Pictures”, “Red Barchetta” and “YYZ”, along with “Subdivisions”, “Freewill” and “La Villa Strangiato”.

Benante is joined on the effort by TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and KORN bassist Roberto “Ra” Díaz, CROBOT vocalist Brandon Yeagley, and TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA keyboardist Mee Eun Kim. The musicians’ RUSH covers were originally made available on Benante’s YouTube channel in 2020, with each musician recording his or her part remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On the EP’s back cover, which Benante shared on his Instagram on Tuesday (April 19), he wrote: ” One year ago I had this idea to make a video while in quarantine. I was feeling pretty down about the passing of Neil Peart and about the Pandemic… I needed to be creative and play! I contacted Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT) and Ra Diaz (SUICIDAL TENDENCIES) about doing a RUSH song and video and they both liked the idea. We ended up doing YYZ. I felt that they were probably feeling the same way I was. and that this would be a great way of jamming and entertaining ourselves while we were stuck at home. The response to the initial video was overwhelming! It really made us feel good during a bad time. I then asked Brandon Yeagley (CROBOT) to Sing on Freewill. Now it started to grow. The tunes were expanding musically and getting feedback!

“The last piece of the puzzle was Mee Eun Kim (TRANS SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA). She does such a great job on Subdivisions.

“A whole year and a half!… I cant believe it’s been a year??

“2020 ended up being a year of making music, art and videos. I released Silver Linings, but didn’t include the RUSH Songs. I wanted the RUSH songs to be on their own EP.

“What you are holding in your hand is the culmination of emotion, determination, great friends, wonderful musicians and the love of RUSH and of course Neil Peart.

“This is dedicated to the Professor.

“Thanks to – Andy Lagis, Asim Ali, Piero Medone and Carla Harvey for motivating me.”

“Moving Pitchers” track listing:

01. Subdivisions
02. Red Barchetta
03. Freewill
04. La Villa Strangiato
05. YYZ

Last May, Benante released a covers album, “Silver Linings”, via Megaforce Records. The 14-track effort featured an all-star cast of “who’s who” in the thrash, metal, and rock worlds, with all cuts culled from Benante’s acclaimed “quarantine jam” video series.

In 2021, ANTHRAX celebrated its 40th anniversary with a number of special activities and events. Formed by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker in Queens, New York on July 18, 1981, ANTHRAX was one of the first thrash metal bands to emerge from the East Coast and quickly became regarded as a leader in the genre alongside METALLICA, SLAYER and MEGADETH.

Active over the past five decades, ANTHRAX has released 11 studio albums, been awarded multiple gold and platinum certifications, received six Grammy nominations, toured the world since 1984 playing thousands of shows, including headlining Madison Square Garden and playing Yankee Stadium with the “Big Four”.

COHEED AND CAMBRIA Shares Acoustic Cover Of KISS's 'Love Gun'

COHEED AND CAMBRIA has shared an acoustic cover of KISS’s “Love Gun”. The band performed the cover for its early entry audience every night on its recent “Great Destroyer Tour” and decided to record it. The new cover coincides with the launch of COHEED AND CAMBRIA’s “Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind” video game. Fans can play as the album’s protagonists, Creature or Sister Spider, as they embark on a mission to save their son Vaxis.

COHEED AND CAMBRIA recently announced details of a massive 2022 North American summer headline trek. Dubbed “A Window Of The Waking Mind Tour”, it’s the band’s first major headline run of shows in five years. The upcoming trek, featuring support from DANCE GAVIN DANCE and MOTHICA, will kick off on July 12 and see the band performing at some of the largest venues of their career in major cities across the continent, including Boston, Philadelphia, Nashville, Denver, Queens, Toronto, Los Angeles and more.

COHEED AND CAMBRIA’s new album, “Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind”, will be released worldwide on May 27. The LP welcomes us back to “The Amory Wars” as the second installment of the five-part “Vaxis” arc about a couple on the run from tyrannical forces and their mysterious new addition. The album’s limited-edition deluxe box set includes the exclusive 96-page illustrated hardcover novel “A Window Of The Waking Mind” which was developed by Sanchez and written by his wife Chondra Echert with strikingly realistic color artwork by Chase Stone. The 9″ x 12″ box set also houses an exclusive Quintillan Speaker Containment Unit Lamp (approximately 8″ diameter), a three-panel fold out poster of expanded album cover art, and the “A Window Of The Waking Mind” black card which will allow all card holders early access to tickets and early entry to COHEED AND CAMBRIA headline dates. All box sets will also come with a CD copy and download of “Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind” along with an official Certificate Of Authenticity.

Named one of Revolver’s “Most Anticipated Albums Of 2022,” “Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind” includes the recently released singles “Rise, Naianasha (Cut The Cord)” and “Shoulders”, the latter of which vaulted into the Top 10 at Active Rock Radio, marking the group’s career highest radio chart position to date. “(It) masterfully pairs heavy metal-infused riffs with sweeping, melodic vocals in a way that only COHEED can,” declared MTV who placed “Shoulders” in their 2021 Favorites round-up. “COHEED AND CAMBRIA are back, and they’re heavy as ever,” asserted Billboard, with Guitar World attesting “COHEED AND CAMBRIA have come out swinging.” Brooklyn Vegan observed, “It finds the band embracing their love of classic heavy metal riffage, before exploding into the kind of soaring chorus that COHEED have been churning out since day one… they sound pretty damn inspired.”

For the last 20 years, COHEED AND CAMBRIA have continuously broken the mold of what a rock band can be, forging their own path and building a universe around their music unlike any other. Whether it is in the way their genre-spanning approach to songwriting has allowed them to bridge worlds without being contained to one, or the multifaceted story arc of their albums and comic book series which mark the longest running concept story in music, COHEED AND CAMBRIA have consistently shaped new standards, never conformed. Comprised of Claudio Sanchez (vocals / guitar), Travis Stever (guitar), Josh Eppard (drums) and Zach Cooper (bass), the band has gripped listeners and press around the globe with their visionary compositions and conceptual mastery. In 2018, COHEED AND CAMBRIA made a stunning debut with their album “Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures”, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums chart, No. 6 current sales and Top 15 on the Billboard 200 chart.

ANN WILSON Releases Cover Of QUEEN's 'Love Of My Life' In Duet With VINCE GILL

HEART frontwoman Ann Wilson has released her breathtaking rendition of QUEEN’s “Love Of My Life”, featuring vocals from Vince Gill. The track is taken from Wilson’s forthcoming album, “Fierce Bliss”, due out April 29 via Silver Lining Music.

Ann says: “‘Love Of My Life’ is a beautiful song about endless love. It was my honor to duet with Vince Gill on this song; an unforgettable experience for which I’m grateful.”

Wilson has always enjoyed bringing new life and verve to classic songs, and with “Love Of My Life” she has helped fashion a definitive version which stands toe-to-toe with the original.

“I had the idea for the QUEEN song ‘Love Of My Life’ as a duet, so I just tried to picture who would be ‘the male angel’ that would sing the other part of it,” explains Wilson. “I thought how great the song would be if it was stripped down and just sung with soul, and it had to be Vince Gill because he’s got that voice, that soul.”

One of the premier hard rock vocalists of all-time, Wilson smashed boundaries with her band HEART, the eight-times platinum, 35-million-plus-selling Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame trailblazers who formed in 1973. During a decades-long career, Wilson rode the roller coaster of fame, fortune and madness, learning both joyous and hard, hard lessons along the way. Fast forward to summer 2020 and a meeting with legendary veteran “artist’s lawyer” Brian Rohan provided the catalyst for “Fierce Bliss”‘s creation.

Ann says: “Brian recommended people to me that knew people in Nashville, so I met these guys like [famed Nashville session guitarist] Tom Bukovac and Tony Lucido at those Muscle Shoals Sound Studio sessions. I’d never met them before, and they really inspired me. It was like a big door opening.”

With the musical chemistry organically established, “Fierce Bliss” came together quickly. “I had originally intended to go in, record a few songs and see what I had, but it just took on this life,” remarks Wilson. “At Sound Stage in Nashville, Kenny Wayne Shepherd came in and played on a couple songs. He was a whole other influence coming in. He just played his butt off, and with the gospel singers and everything else coming together, the whole project just started to grow.”

Wilson continues: “I’d known Warren Haynes from GOV’T MULE for a while. We’d written a couple songs together with GOV’T MULE playing, and those rounded out the record. So all of a sudden, where there was no record before, suddenly I had eleven cool songs that I really liked.”

“Fierce Bliss” is classic rock comfort food of the finest ingredients, carrying a richness and light that allows you to escape into timeless nostalgia. 11 perfectly weighted and selected songs ranging from Wilson’s own co-penned originals to breathtaking covers and collaborations. “A Moment In Heaven” could easily apply to anyone who has seen their career suddenly bathed in a bright beam of glory before the spotlight is abruptly moved elsewhere. There is a deeply spiritual air about Ann Wilson 2022, and both “Black Wing” and “Angel’s Blues” show different facets of that soul and ethos. Furthermore, Wilson brings new life and verve to classic songs, such as QUEEN’s “Love Of My Life”, EURYTHMICS’ “Missionary Man” and Robin Trower’s “Bridge Of Sighs”, and has helped fashion definitive versions of each which stand toe-to-toe with the originals.

To cap it all, the album artwork comes from the mind and hands of celebrated fantasy artist Roger Dean, who aside from his work in fantasy art is also renowned for his YES sleeve artwork.

Wilson will soon be hitting the road with her new band, and make no mistake, she’s a performer at heart thus her excitement is palpable. Ann Wilson seems to be more comfortable with herself (and her art) than ever before with both “Fierce Bliss” and the band she’ll be touring with. “I think that for someone who’s been through as much as I have, and has lived to tell the tales, it’s okay to share my experiences,” says Wilson sagely. “I’ve heard from a lot of younger musicians and listeners too who have thanked me for staying around and for just keeping upright, just making it through, making the concessions once but not twice, and being able to live through it all with dignity.”

This past February, Ann released the first single from “Fierce Bliss”, a song called “Greed”. At the time, Ann stated about the track: “‘Greed’ is that thing in our animal nature that makes us want MORE. Whether it be money, sex, power or ecstasy, it fires our craving. It happens with all of us. When you turn around and catch yourself making decisions because you want the money, or because you’re caught in the headlights of glory, well, those are greedy moments.”

Wilson continued: “I think people who claim to have made every decision from a root of pure idealism, and never done anything dark or greedy, is lying. I think everybody who ventures into especially the music industry hoping for a career with big success, ends up making these Faustian bargains at some point even if only briefly. It’s an aggressive song and I think I write best when I’m angry.”

“Fierce Bliss” track listing:

01. Greed
02. Black Wing
03. Bridge Of Sighs

DEF LEPPARD Releases New Single 'Take What You Want'

The official visualizer for DEF LEPPARD’s new single, “Take What You Want”, can be seen below. It is the second single from DEF LEPPARD’s upcoming album, “Diamond Star Halos”, which will arrive on May 27 via UMe. The follow-up to 2015’s self-titled LP is available for pre-order now in multiple configurations, including a deluxe edition, 2-LP vinyl, digital formats and more. Exclusive bundles including newly designed album merch have also launched.

Last month, DEF LEPPARD released “Diamond Star Halos”‘s first single, “Kick”. The song thrusts into an anthemic stadium-ready frenzy kickstarted with driving guitars and bombastic drums woven into its musical fabric. Meanwhile, the chorus has all the makings of another iconic LEPPARD hit with its skyscraping vocals and melodies the band has become synonymous for.

DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen, who came up with “Kick” as an additional track after the first 14 songs were already completed, told Billboard that “‘Kick’ represented where we were at as well. It’s got that glam rock feel, that hand-clap groove, big vocals. It was just a no-brainer. It was not only that it’s got to be on the album, it’s got to be the first single as well.”

“It’s a stadium anthem, and we were about to go into stadiums,” singer Joe Elliott said. “We didn’t write it for that reason, but Phil’s always trying to write the next ‘Sugar’ or ‘We Will Rock You’ or ‘I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll’. We all are, but he actually came up with one, and it’s, like, ‘Yeah, we’ve got to do that,’ so now it’s a 15-song record.”

The artwork for “Diamond Star Halos” is art in itself. The design follows pedigree with their instantly recognizable album covers from their celebrated past. With images by world renowned photographer and director Anton Corbijn, styling concepts by Maryam Malakpour and graphics by the U.K.-based Munden Brothers, the design truly follows the band’s influence through their eyes today.

Over the past two years, DEF LEPPARD recorded “Diamond Star Halos” simultaneously in three different countries with Elliott in Ireland, Rick Savage (bass) in England, and Collen, Vivian Campbell (guitar) and Rick Allen (drums) in the United States. Without the pressure of timelines or a fixed schedule, they poured all of their energy into crafting 15 meaningful tracks with a mixture of classic spirit meets modern fire. Thematically, they nodded to their earliest collective influences such as David Bowie, T.REX and MOTT THE HOOPLE, among others. The title itself notably references T.REX’s “Bang a Gong (Get It On)”. However, they didn’t embark on this journey alone. The multi-Grammy Award-winning and legendary artist Alison Krauss lent her instantly recognizable and angelic voice to “This Guitar” and “Lifeless”, while David Bowie pianist Mike Garson performs on “Goodbye For Good This Time” and “Angels (Can’t Help You Now)”.

“Diamond Star Halos” track listing:

01. Take What You Want
02. Kick
03. Fire It Up
04. This Guitar (feat. Alison Krauss]
05. Sos Emergency
06. Liquid Dust
07. U Rok Mi
08. Goodbye For Good This Time
09. All We Need
10. Open Your Eyes
11. Gimme A Kiss
12. Angels (Can’t Help You Now)
13. Lifeless (feat. Alison Krauss)
14. Unbreakable
15. From Here To Eternity

DEF LEPPARD’s “The Stadium Tour” with MÖTLEY CRÜE, POISON and JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS was originally scheduled to take place in the summer of 2020 but ended up being pushed back to 2021, and then to 2022, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

RUSH drummer Neil Peart died in January 2020 in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He was 67 years old.

RUSH’s final show took place at the Forum in Los Angeles on August 1, 2015. Peart indicated at the time that he wanted to retire while he was still able to play well, along with a desire to spend more time at home with his young daughter.

RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson and bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee have repeatedly said that RUSH will never do a show unless all three musicians agree to take part. They haven’t performed as RUSH without Peart since he joined the band in 1974.

“We start playing the outdoor stadiums of South America, literally within two weeks, and continue on to Europe and Australia and eventually North America, Japan, all that stuff. Mexico,” Simmons said. “And this is going to be the last tour. We’re done.”

“We’re approaching 50 years of doing this, which is unbelievable because we never thought we’d last more than a few years,” he added.

Gene went on to say that he and fellow KISS co-founder Paul Stanley are in agreement that it’s time to retire from the road.

“The last thing that you want to do is be a guy that stays in the ring too long and gets his ass beat,” Simmons said. “Get out of the ring when you’re a champion.

“You got to understand — we love [Mick] Jagger and Bruno Mars and Bono and anybody else, they’re all great, but if you put those guys — Beyoncé, put Beyoncé in my outfit with seven-to-eight-inch platform heels, dragon boots that each weigh as much as a bowling ball, the entire outfit, studs, leather and armor is about 40 pounds,” he explained. “The guitar and the studs is 12 pounds by itself. Then, you got to spit fire, fly through the air and do that for two hours. They would pass out within a half hour.”

“We are the hardest-working band out there and take pride in it,” Gene added. “And not every band should be out there too long. You’ve got to have some pride and not stay too long. Always keep them wanting. I’m the most blessed and grateful guy in the world to be able to be in a band where I can wear more makeup and higher heels than your girlfriend.”

KISS was forced to put its farewell trek on hold in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last October, Stanley said that the final concert of the “End Of The Road” tour will likely happen by early 2023.

“End Of The Road” was originally scheduled to conclude on July 17, 2021 in New York City but has since been extended. The trek was announced in September 2018 following a KISS performance of the band’s classic song “Detroit Rock City” on “America’s Got Talent”.

KISS’s current lineup consists of original members Stanley and Simmons, alongside later band additions, guitarist Tommy Thayer (since 2002) and drummer Eric Singer (on and off since 1991).

Formed in 1973 by Stanley, Simmons, drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley, KISS’s first “farewell” tour in 2000 was the last to feature the group’s original lineup.
