No Corporate Beer Reviews: Junkyard God

Beer: Junkyard God
Brewery: 3 Floyds Brewing Company (Munster, IN)
Style: Lager – Pale
4.5% ABV / N/A IBU

With any luck, you’ll have Junkyard God in hand during Pig Destroyer’s Prowler in the Yard set during the second night of Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer Fest: Philly. When you have a chance to drink a brewery/band collaboration during that band’s set—particularly a beer designed with that show in mind—the universe demands that you take the opportunity. And if you’re worried about how you’re going to be standing upright after a day and half of performances, unlimited pours, late night food truck offerings, restless sleep and two years of pent-up anxiety and anticipation, this is the hair of the dog you need.

As the third 3 Floyds x Pig Destroyer collaboration beer, Junkyard God is a dramatic departure from the high gravity, mega-hopped Permanent Funeral and Army of Hops. A 4.5% ABV Mexican-style lager is probably not where anyone expected they’d go with this, but Junkyard God is wonderfully drinkable lager that’s best when it’s ice cold but still pretty appealing as it warms up a bit. That’s the true test of a lager, really—will you still be stoked on it when PxDx makes it to “Junkyard God” way at the end of the set? If it lasts that long, absolutely.

Junkyard God shares a few characteristics with Corona, in that it pours with a very foamy head that resembles sea spray and there’s an unmistakable lemon-y zip and acidity to the flavor. This beer plays very well within that style. But, because it’s 3 Floyds jamming with Pig Destroyer, there’s more to Junkyard God than what’s on the surface, with West Coast IPA type tropical notes from the hops melding with the citrus flavor of the lager and a New England IPA like cloudiness that resembles grapefruit juice. That’s pretty next-level for any type of lager. Go forth and devour in the key of E.
