As property of valued employees at the international mega conglomerate known as Decibel magazine, we’re incredibly excited about Metal & Beer Fest’s return to Denver this year. Biased? Sure. But even beyond the carefully curated bands and brews lined up for our fourth rager in the Mile High City, there’s something a little more near and dear to this column’s heart: There’s gonna be a lot of nerds there. A number of previous player characters are due to hit the stage at the Fillmore, including Blood Incantation’s Jeff Barrett, Primitive Man’s Joe Linden and, most importantly for today, the Red Chord’s Mike McKenzie. After nearly 3 years away, the Kill Screen arcade’s second-ever guest has made his triumphant return, accompanied by the Red Chord’s bassist Greg Weeks, for some incredibly silly co-op action.
It’s no secret that Decibel has been fans of these death metal Massholes for quite some time. Clients, their certified 10/10 album and Decibel Hall of Fame inductee, has been tapped for a special 20th anniversary full album play when they hit the stage this December. Second only to their crushing legacy, however, is the undeniable insanity and charm that this duo brings to any interview they conduct. Their classic run-ins with Metal Injection, their reassurances that they would actually practice before their Philadelphia performance to our increasingly worried reasonably curious editor-in-chief back in 2022 and now their antics with your diligent co-nerds prove that no matter what the topic, they might actually eventually talk about it. Come, sit down. It’s time once again to get the death metal duo to dick around for a while during company time to tell us what’s on their mind.
