CUFF ’EM
For the last couple of months, we learned about how Josh Smith employs repetition as one of the three tools he likes to use in order to strengthen his “melodic narrative” in the development of an improvised solo. The other two tools are what Josh likes to call “handcuffs,” where he’ll force himself to play within a specific position, and “call and response,” where he will play a phrase and then “answer” it with the subsequent phrase. This month, we’ll apply the “handcuffs” approach.
