If you’re unaware of Shane Embury’s prodigious musical output, you reading the wrong website. But even by the longtime Napalm Death’s bassist’s incredibly prolific standards, 2021 became a banner year for his Dark Sky Burial project. The instrumental/ambient/electronic solo venture that first appeared at the start of the pandemic has released three new full-length LPs this year, the latest, Omnis Cum in Tenebris Praesertim Vita Laboret, appearing just a little over a week ago.

“This album is the forth and final part of the first Dark Sky Burial quadrilogy,” Embury tells Decibel. “Honesty counts they say, so the journey to these albums and their compositions — the themes and concepts — were born a long time ago! It just took a pandemic to finally give birth to rebirth!

“I am not special,” he continues. “We all experience loss, pain, suffering, abandonment… fear! Dark Sky Burial, with the help of close kindred spirits, sonically documents these many emotions of mine and has really helped me in the darkest of times.”

While times are likely about to get even darker — at least for a little while — Embury will have no shortage of inspiration to fashion into new Dark Sky Burial material.

“This new album coming out during the end of a recent [U.S.] tour [with Napalm Death] that I almost didn’t want to do for many reasons. Now it feels like like a small triumph for me. To have completed what I envisioned in the time frame I set out is for me a milestone in the ever twisting labyrinth ahead. There still a long way to go. Watch this space.”

Order Omnis Cum in Tenebris Praesertim Vita Laboret (and all Dark Sky Burial releases) via DSB’s official Bandcamp page.
