Weald & Woe guitarist and vocalist Jeff Young got bitten by the medieval bug at a young age. It’s little surprise that, down the road, his music is informed by the same fantastic stories and myths that captivated his young mind. “I was introduced to a lot of terrific fantasy media when I was pretty young,” he says. “Some people are really into horses or boats or Japan. I like chainmail and siege weaponry.”
The band’s new album, Far From The Light Of Heaven (streaming below), touches on some of those timeless myths and even the Grail legend. “This album is wrestling with ‘what are the costs of ambition?’ Physical, emotional, mental, etc. How far are we willing to go for our greater good, or in search of our philosophical Grail? In the last number of years or so, I’ve become fascinated with the question of ‘have I lived/am I living a good life?’ When my time is up, will I look back fondly on what I’ve done and what I have achieved? And as much as that’s something that has driven me to build a steadfast work ethic, it’s also something that has kind of threateningly loomed over me. This album is a lot of me confronting that ghost head-on.”
Far From The Light Of Heaven was recorded in home studios in Idaho and Brooklyn. Drums were recorded at The ChopShop in Boise, ID. The album was mixed and mastered by Garry Brents (Memorrhage, Sallow Moth, Known Demise). Grab a physical copy or a digital copy.
Weald & Woe will tour the Southwest starting August 1st. Follow them for updates on venues and dates.
