Five For Friday: June 13, 2025

Greetings, Decibel readers!

I have an admission to make, I’ve never seen the first Friday the 13th film. I have only seen parts two and four, Freddy Vs. Jason and … Jason X. As I’ve said here before, part four is definitely the most fun out of what I’ve seen — pure popcorn horror schlock, it’s almost at the slapstick level but perfectly rides the line. Hopefully me and my movie-night buddies can fill in some cinematic gaps soon with the rest of the catalog (particularly parts one and three).

Anyway, here’s some metal for the weekend (… which we’ll hopefully all make it through).

Bocc – Obrint El Taüt

Funny thing, in all my years covering metal, I actually haven’t run across that many bands from Spain. Like, Wormed and Teitanblood are the only ones that immediately come to mind. But I sure am glad I fell into the pit and discovered this band. Bocc is old-school death doom done the dirty way in the tradition of Autopsy, Winter and Cianide. Punchy enough for the pit, but menacing enough to just sit there and brood, you can’t possibly go wrong with this.

Hexvessel – Nocturne

The long-running practitioners of trippy, blackened atmospherics return with their followup to 2023’s Polar Veil. It’s a sound that both evokes the majesty of nature and serves as inspiration for intense introspection. The riffs just work out that way somehow.

Outergods – Dethroned & Devoured

Meanwhile, this album just rips. Fans of blackened death metal will come for crushing rhythms, fans of grindcore will stay for the unhinged energy of it all.

Shrinkwrap Killers – Feed the Clones Pt. 2

And now for those of you just looking for something weird. It’s like if Weird Al just made an album in his classic style but mixed in elements of Type O Negative, Bauhaus, and Joy Division. I might be totally off-base with what actually inspired the band, but that’s at least what jumps out at me.

Sigh – I Saw the World End (Hangman’s Hymn MMXXV)

It was a real pleasure to finally witness Sigh perform live at Maryland Deathfest this year, and so it’s double-your-pleasure to get a rerecording of Hangman’s Hymn. Whereas the previous version had a cutting sound that hewed to the center of your brain (especially the guitars), this new imagining has an all-enveloping, balanced quality. I love Hangman’s Hymn as it was, but this is a pretty cool way to exhume the songs and give them new life.
