EP REVIEW: The Good, The Bad & The Rest Of Us – The Young Hearts

British punks, THE YOUNG HEARTS, are back with their newest EP The Good, The Bad & The Rest Of Us. The upcoming release aims to dig deeper into personal topics surrounding the quartet that include fatherhood, maturity and figuring yourself out as you get older, with heavy emphasis on their roots of hailing from the small coastal town of Deal, far removed from the more bustling music scenes within the UK. Yet that doesn’t mean that they can’t be louder than life with their influences including the likes of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and THE BOUNCING SOULS, allowing their EP to strike a solid balance between anthemic compositions and emotionally charged lyrics.

One thing to note is that from start to finish is that this EP is very uplifting and sets the scene somewhere happy, potentially taking place during the summertime. Opening the EP up is the title track that has an immediate kick off into uplifting pop-rock territory, complete with pop melodies and a synth keyboard that only serves to elevate the anthemic rock chorus that just gives off a feeling of escapism from reality.

Another thing to note is the comparison between lead vocalist, Craig Lawrence, and NECK DEEP’s Ben Barlow singing style, giving the EP that pop-punk edge, working into the visual scenes of going on a road trip with friends as heard on Outlaws, or throwing back to simpler, nostalgic times during your teen years as heard on Hell Or High Water. Sure, most songs may follow the same styled layout of fast pop-punk meets pop-rock, but it’s a style that is true and tested. And perfectly suited for THE YOUNG HEARTS.

Yet closing track, A Life On Fire, takes on a more serious tone where, while the instrumentals follow a similar style as heard across the EP, it’s here that the lyrics are the focus with themes relating heavily to existentialism, elevated further by the beautiful choir of voices that come in towards the end. A solid way to close out a solid EP.

It’s a fair statement to say that THE YOUNG HEARTS have created the perfect EP to soundtrack your summer.

Rating: 8/10
