EP REVIEW: (prove me wrong) – cheerbleederz

Indie-punks CHEERBLEEDERZ are back with their newest EP (prove me wrong). According to the London trio, the EP puts a massive emphasis on themes relating to growing up and trying to navigate young adult life with the relationships that come and go along the way, which CHEERBLEEDERZ have been able to deal with thanks for their enduring love and support for each other. Along with just a general love for rocking out together.

Even if this is your first time hearing of the trio themselves, not to worry, they’ll make you feel right at home in the sense that you feel like you’re also their friend as they chat and share their feelings on ongoing scenarios in their personal lives. With there only being four tracks on the EP, one might wonder if they’ll keep to the same topic from start to finish, yet CHEERBLEEDERZ avoid this trap while being consistent in their style of cool and collected indie rock interlaced with moments of frustration and cheek.

Starting things out we have i deserved better, a track reflecting on a break-up where we conclude that, as the title suggests, we truly do deserve someone better. As mentioned, there’s a somewhat casual vibe to the EP where we feel like we’re chatting with a friend about life, something reinforced with the spoken-word style vocals that narrate the story with a blend of indie-punk guitar riffs and even some elements of drone. Moving into alternative rock passenger princess, the conversation has now shifted into something more light-hearted where one embraces the fact that they do not have a drivers license and are happy being the passenger princess in tongue-in-cheek way.

Yet before you can assume we’re only here for a laugh, sleepwalking starts that has a more melancholic feel with its slow indie-rock guitar that’s then juxtaposed with catchy drumbeats and occasional switch up in pace. The lyrics themselves reflect on existentialism and pondering on lost youth, yet even through the low points reflected there’s still something that feels hopeful. Seemingly things remain serious in closing track you’ve got it in for me that, again, starts out slow as the conversation with our friends moves into the mourning of a lost friendship, yet we seem to be between the stages of anger and acceptance with shifts into fast punk during the chorus. An accurate portrayal of frustration and confusion.

A short but sweet EP that will help you navigate adulthood and allow you a moment to vent when things get too much.

Rating: 8/10
