EP REVIEW: Philosophy Of The Blade – Domain

Hardcore EP’s seem to be getting shorter and shorter, but usually the shorter the better, the more relentless they are. DOMAIN have no trouble covering those bases in general, especially not on their surprise EP Philosophy Of The Blade. With less than an eight minute run time the South Florida outfit leave themselves little room for error in the carnage that they whip up in what feels like a blink of an eye.

People are beyond frustrated about the power system that we live under, and so are DOMAIN. The ones who exploit the system and uphold the hegemony will exploit it until the ones who are abused by it, the working classes, are passed out on the floor with a boot at the back of their heads. Lost Souls Wonder expresses just that, clear lyrics combined with ferocious growls make for a visceral listen as Alex Rothberger yells “Smile and obey, repeat the process, day by day.”

However unwavering their political conviction remains on the following Philosophy Of The Blade, it’s biblical comparisons in tow, only having two new tracks on the EP unfortunately doesn’t give them much opportunity to hint to what is next for DOMAIN sonically. Similar to their debut album Life’s Cold Grasp at present they aren’t reinventing metallic hardcore, or themselves all that much. The emphasis on the domineering oppression of the working classes during these two tracks shouldn’t just be put down as typical hardcore branding. This feels like the next phase for DOMAIN.

They close out with a cover of SEPULTURA‘s Propaganda and it falls right into place for the EP, and a cover that fits as well as a missing jigsaw piece sends the message just as well as a new track would. With this new phase looming, it appears that like all good Florida residing hardcore outfits, DOMAIN are prepared to take action, and this is just a taste of it.
