Demo:listen: Malefaction

Welcome to Demo:listen, your weekly peek into the future of underground extreme metal. Whether it’s death, black, doom, sludge, grind, thrash, -core, heavy, speed, progressive, stoner, retro, post-, punk/, etc. we’re here to bring you the latest demos from the newest bands. On this week’s Demo:listen we expose the nefarious machinations behind New Jersey’s Malefaction.

Formerly known as Nefarious Cabal, Malefaction is the latest incarnation to emerge from New Jersey’s cult of extreme metal-devotees calling themselves NVNM, for Nihil Verum Nisi Mors (roughly: Nothing is true except death). Perhaps you can recall the early days of Demo:listen, when we covered the demo Invocation of the Profane by Massive Retaliation. Well the same two underground metal warriors, T. Warrior and J. Aversario, behind Massive Retaliation are also responsible for Malefaction. These two maniacs have several bands together, though none so raw and vicious as Malefaction.

Guitarist, vocalist and Deceiver of Reality, T.Warrior explains how Malefaction was born out of his “enduring love of music that is spiteful and ugly.”

T. Warrior, Deceiver of Reality, guitars and vocals.

“Of all the bands I’ve been involved in, I’ve never really had the chance to be full-on harsh and hostile in this manner . . . It is very satisfying on a personal level,” says T. Warrior. “[T]his band must be raw. Nothing else would sound appropriate. It is very important to me that the production matches the vibe—different styles call for different sonic and aesthetic approaches.”

J. Aversario, Inverter of Protection, drums and leads.

As you may have guessed, not all bands under the sign of NVNM are primitive black/thrash. Pick up the latest New Jersey Metal Attack sampler tape that NVNM put out earlier this year to hear for yourself. Two things are immediately clear upon listening to the sampler: 1.) These NVNM guys were born too late, and 2.) we’re fortunate they’re around now because they’re keeping our subculture filthy and pure.

“We entered the Dungeon With No End armed with a 6 pack and dragged a hideous beast from the cruel depths!” says T. Warrior in regards to how he and J. Aversario (herein known as Inverter of Protection) recorded Malefaction’s Blasphemous Insurgency demo. “Aversario engineered and mixed the whole thing. He’s been doing a lot of excellent work with other projects on the label, including the new DSS [Deep Space Sorcerer] EP. He has a different style than I do, and I knew it would be very fitting for this demo.”

Blasphemous Insurgency is three tracks of stomping, infernal metal of death, plus a cover of Hellhammer’s “Third of the Storms.” Although the majority of the demo races at the speed of demons escaping from Hell, these songs are slayed with such belligerent barbarism that for all their hellish velocity there’s something overwhelmingly violent and cavemanly at work here.

MALEFACTION – BLASPHEMOUS INSURGENCY by Malefaction

“Almost everything I do with NVNM pays tribute to Hellhammer and Celtic Frost in some way,” admits T. Warrior. “‘Third of the Storms’ is a particularly ripping track that I thought could be appropriately rendered in the Malefaction style.”

Those of you clamoring for a physical manifestation are in luck. Well, at least 50 of you are. In two weeks’ time copies of Blasphemous Insurgency will be available on cassette format. T. Warrior assures me that these home-dubbed tapes will be  “dubbed very loud at normal speed.”

Along with the new DSS tape, Temple of Heat (another NVNM project), look for copies of Blasphemous Insurgency to be available (briefly) in early September.
