Whether you know him as Michael Kogler, J.J. or V Wahntraum, the enigmatic visionary behind KARG and HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY has been standing tall in the post-black metal domain for decades. His well of ideas continues to copiously flow over as his substantial catalogue of stunning releases shows no sign of losing momentum. KARG has developed from a one-man project into a fully-fledged collective with the latest effort Marodeur being the first release written as a group. How will this add to their dynamic?

Schnee ist das Blut der Geister welcomes you with endearing atmospherics that transition into an emotive, energised soundscape packed with melancholic melodies and Wahntraum‘s signature, anguish-ridden howls. The piano sequence which closes the track is escapism at its finest. Findling enters a distorted, heavier realm. Potent drum beats guide the way as captivating rhythm work leaves an indelible mark. Yūgen sustains the gloomy yet charming stride. Impactful instrumentation and meticulously layered guitar work amplifies the immersive environment.

Verbrannte Brücken initially possesses crisp, clear tones that would provide the ideal cinematic backdrop. A barrage of powerful drum beats burst through the serenity. Annapurna follows suit. A sublime array of colour fills the air. The contrast between the vibrant musicianship and tormented vocal stylings strikes an emotional chord.

Reminiszenzen einer Jugend ebbs and flows in fascinating fashion. Poignant harmonies mesh with invigorating intensity as you traverse its many twists and turns.
Kimm utilises enticing grooves and entrancing intensity like a twisted siren luring you into your inevitable doom. Anemoia opts for an entirely different approach as prominent bass lines and pulsing kick drums take centre stage. The subdued demeanour allows for the string-based intricacies to shine through. However, the aggression does not stay shackled for too long.

Marodeur doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but when you are as consistently impressive as KARG you hold little inclination to meander into excessive experimentation. This outing further reiterates that an expansive wealth of creativity whilst still remaining true to your established sound is entirely possible. Huge sprawling terrains enveloped with emphatic bursts of equal parts melody and melancholy exhibit why the man of many names is still firing on all cylinders.
