ALBUM REVIEW: Glory Or Nothing – Overdrivers

French hard-rockers, OVERDRIVERS are back with their latest record Glory Or Nothing. For the quartet, their mission has been the same for the last decade since their formation – releasing and performing rock tracks that reflect their raw, headbanging energy. Just pure fun rock n roll to make listeners smile and forget reality, a fact that’s prevalent from start to finish on this album.

At a quick glance at the track listing, it would be fair to assume that we’re about to enter classic 80s rock territory that will be fun, energetic and at times a little cheesy. A presumption that’s mostly correct, yet OVERDRIVERS manage to exceed these expectations on a few occasions. To start things off, we have Kings Of The Road, a fast rock n roll track nostalgic of the 80s, an ongoing theme for this record.

With its apt title, this song is the perfect thing to play on a road trip with your friends, it’s easy to imagine everyone rolling their windows down and singing along with the anthemic chorus at the top of your lungs. There is an odd decision made to do a false stop towards the end where the chorus and the song seemingly end abruptly, before repeating itself suddenly.

For the most part, this is a rock n roll heavy album that would be the perfect soundtrack for, as mentioned, that road trip, that party, or just something to rock out to on your own when you need that pick me up. It’s a reminder that rock music can be fun in the same way that it can be serious. There is a selection of songs that you’ll listen to for the first time and by the final chorus you’ll find yourself singing along, and even earlier on, you’ll tapping your foot and bopping your head along. Maybe even headbang a little.

Perfect examples of this are Perfection Is My Name a bouncy track with an unforgettable chorus to match, you can’t help but dance along. The sillier, yet feel-good, tracks My Girlfriend Is  A Pornstar and Bad Breath Girl that, on the one hand, are a little cheesy and ridiculous, yet you can’t but smile with their little messages regarding self confidence and not letting others bring you down.

The title track itself would very much suit an 80s action film, playing over the montage of our hero preparing for the final showdown. With vocals that bring to mind comparisons to Axl Rose, it can fair to say that the track is a little cheesy, but it’s just pure fun and you won’t be able to stop yourself from singing along to the anthemic chorus of, “better, faster, stronger!”. Sure, there are moments that will make you want to roll your eyes, but you’ll immediately follow that up with a smile as you mouth along to the chorus and dance along to the beats. Just pure, feelgood rock n roll to make you happy.

Rating: 7/10
