ALBUM REVIEW: Biographyte – Cytotoxin

German death metal troupe CYTOTOXIN have propelled themselves through the genre in spectacular fashion since their inception in 2011, garnering a flock of fans in the process. Following on from their critically acclaimed Nuklearth release they unfortunately met with a brick wall known as COVID-19. Whilst this threw all of their touring intentions out of the nearest window they knuckled down to construct the eagerly awaited follow-up entitled Biographyte which is due for release on April 11th. Will they be able to capitalise on their considerable momentum?

Hope Terminator skips the warm-up and bounds right into waves of wild instrumentation. Crazy sweeps and frenetic drum sequences ebb and flow amongst formidable guttural vocals. Condemnesia possesses a similarly imposing stride. Enticing hooks meet chaotic technicality with a helping of haunting atmospherics to breathe additional life into the intense subject matter. Behind Armored Doors is equipped with a blistering pace that refuses to relent. Punishing drum work and cleverly layered riffing prove to be an unstoppable force.

Biographyte is as addictive as it is devastating. Its hypnotic blend of brutality makes it impossible to avert your attention. Deadzone Desert evokes the imagery depicted on the album artwork as the sounds of jangling chains and pounding footsteps traverse their way through the unforgiving desert environment. The Everslave returns to the maniacal insanity that is the epitome of playing Guitar Hero on Expert. The machine-gun-like aggression is remarkably alluring. Eventless Horizon is equally as unhinged. Gruesome gurgling vocals join forces with mesmeric riff segments.

Bulloverdozed maintains the breakneck speed as explosive savagery meticulously meshes with dramatic, melodic mayhem. Transition Of The Staring Dead opens with an impressive volley of bass riffing before pummelling you into dust with its ferocious, rhythmic destruction. Exceptional lead work leaves an emphatic impression.

Revelation refers to its namesake, the final book of the New Testament, providing a spoken excerpt referring to the seven angels with their seven trumpets leading to a series of apocalyptic events. The ominous crackling of the Geiger counter is particularly unnerving as the speaker succumbs to radiation. From Bitter Rivers embodies this dark mood with gloomy, bleak tones. Whilst this track isn’t as rapid as its predecessors it is still packed with an abundance of impeccable intricacies.

Some may be under the impression that CYTOTOXIN are an outfit wrapped in a radiation-inspired gimmick. In fact, they take their craft and their integrity very seriously. This mentality shines through in every facet of Biographyte. Masterful technicality meets intelligent song structures, ensuring that the vast array of moving parts never collide horribly in the middle. People may still be mourning the abrupt vanishing act executed by NECROPHAGIST decades later but extreme metal is in safe hands as long as this talented quintet inhabit the earth.
