In such little time, TEN56. have made an impact of seismic proportions, rapidly becoming a must-see live act. They have also built a reputation for barely staying still for more than a matter of moments, with a consistent string of impressive releases. The eagerly anticipated follow-up to full-length debut Downer, entitled IO, is out now via Out Of Line Music and is poised to propel them to even bigger opportunities.
Doormat quickly instils an abrasive, dangerous tone. Crushing blastbeats collide with aggressive vocal bursts. Pig is equally as unnerving. Distinctly personal lyrical vitriol is delivered in a mixture of rapping and venomous growls whilst bludgeoning instrumentation assaults your senses. Snapped Neck sustains the rhythmic brutality with powerful grooves laced with hauntingly melodic swathes.
LIFEISACHORE.MOV provides a tongue-in-cheek advert-like interlude which wouldn’t feel out of place annoyingly slotted between videos on your favourite streaming services. I Know Where You Sleep comes hurtling through your eardrums like a battering ram. The jarring heaviness combined with the blood-curdling scream of the song title sends a chill down your spine. Good Morning proves to be just as unrelenting. Gruesome intensity runs copiously through its veins as it unleashes an addictive beat that rattles your bones.
Earwig is as formidable as it is scathing. Frenzied riffing runs side by side with blunt, caustic vocal barrages. ICU spews forth menacing hooks as unhinged screams and savage snare strikes add an additional element of gritty violence. PTY FCK ensures that the tenacious ferocity doesn’t dip in momentum as industrial stylings blend into the harsh soundscape.
Friends offers up an unsettling internal monologue with multiple voices intertwining in harrowing fashion. Banshee reprises the chaotic vocal shapeshifting as demonic guttural explosions lock horns with swift rapping sequences. IO takes a considerably different approach to what we have experienced thus far. Opting for a candid, vulnerable narrative that lifts the curtain between art and artist. A poignant but captivating closer that will leave a lasting impression.
IO is like a sharp shock to the system, equipped with an impactful array of destructive capabilities filled with struggle and anger, but also remorse. Frontman Aaron Matts has not been afraid to disclose his inner turmoil, with the stark realism of his life experiences laid bare for all to hear. Not many artists are brave enough to put themselves under such spotlight and for that he should be commended. TEN56. have once again shown precisely why they are one of the most intriguing prospects in the world of deathcore. Rather than just blindly following the majority, they are confident enough to carve their own niche and will be justly rewarded for their efforts.
