Video Premiere: In the Company of Serpents – “A Patchwork Art”

If it seems that Denver sludge trio In the Company of Serpents are pursuing an unusual sonic path on their latest single, “A Patchwork Art,” be patient, because what sounds like a Spaghetti Western theme soon erupts into a massive slab of ear crush, courtesy of Grant Netzorg (guitar/vocals), Ben Pitts (bass, lap steel) and Andy Thomas (drums). The light and dark sides of the song continue to do battle, until the doom ultimately snuffs out any whiff of the Old West. This is just full-on dire sludge, no apologies. The accompanying video, made by Jake Mulhern, offers a limb-and-organ rending interpretation of the “patchwork art” theme, with some apocalyptic atom bomb images thrown in for good measure. The track was taken from the band’s upcoming fifth full-length, A Crack in Everything.

The new album was recorded to tape by Pete deBoer in December 2024, at World Famous Studios, Denver. It is being self-released on vinyl, CD and digitally on July 11. Place your preorder here. And check out the live dates supporting the new album below the video.

Guitarist/vocalist Grant had this to say about the band’s latest single:

“This is a song that deals with some of the delusions one encounters in active addiction. I wrote it almost entirely in rehab, and have mixed feelings about it; I’ve grown to like it quite a bit, but initially wasn’t sure I even wanted to include it on the album, as it makes me feel vulnerable. The lyrics address some of the artifice employed and the masks that one dons when in the depths of a bad alcohol habit, e.g. ‘Self-appointed king dethroned, Not but a jester all alone… a jaundiced husk draped upon bones.’ As with most of this record, there is still a glimmer of hope, and the final verse is something of a ‘phoenix rising from the ashes’ motif:  ‘Conflagration funeral pyre; oppressive shame bathed in fire; flames dance across my sullen mire;  rise from the ashes, my desire.’”
