EP REVIEW: Fool’s Gold – Rothco

Yorkshire post-rock supergroup, ROTHCO, have put out their debut EP, Fool’s Gold. Formed only last year, ROTHCO’s members are a part of other bands including BUNKERPOP, BLACK RAVINES, and BLACK DELTA MOVEMENT, brought together by a late-night conversation and a promise to work hard and look after one another. When it comes to their sound, they have embraced chaos through each member’s different taste to create something they’ve dubbed “Technicolour New Wave” with heavy emphasis on psychedelic, disco and gothic post-punk.

One way to view this EP is as split in two with the first half being more “typical” in terms of layout and style, with the opening title-track being an alternative rock meets blues rock composition with contrasting deep bass, guitar, and vocals with softer harmonies and sound effects. Resulting in a loud conclusion as everything peaks in volume and clashes in the best way. While Coming In Hot can be described simply as a short but sweet rock n roll song.

Yet entering the second half we enter theatrical horror punk territory with You’re Not The Only One featuring creepy sounds and spoken word vocals that are accompanied by a low strumming guitar and occasional shushing. It’s not necessarily atmospheric, yet you remain intrigued in that you wonder where this is heading. There’s then a shift signalled by the bass as the vocals take on a growling quality as things kick off fully.

Things are very much the same with closing track Jackson, only this time we can hear a return of the earlier blues rock elements. And it’s here that you notice that the vocals sound very much like Tim Curry in Rocky Horror Picture Show. And trust us when we say that’s a compliment. A wacky, yet brilliant, EP that may confuse you but at the very least will leave an impression on you. A strong statement to make from ROTHCO on their debut release.

Rating: 7/10
