New York City’s fantasy doom outfit Castle Rat returns in glitz and glamour with their video for “Wizard,” culled from their upcoming album The Bestiary, due out September 19. Following Castle Rat’s established sound, “Wizard” is fuzzy and warm, meeting at the halfway point between classic doom and hard rock bordering heavy metal.
It comes accompanied by an incredible video, one that will have you digging out your VHS copies of Conan the Barbarian and Beastmaster. As Castle Rat’s singer The Rat Queen tells Decibel, “Wizard” tells an important part of the hero’s journey told throughout The Bestiary:
“’WIZARD’ details our heroic sorcerer’s wisdom, struggles, and journey as he learns to reckon with the beast he’s kept locked away within his own crystal heart for centuries. The Wizard must reintegrate with the creature after its crystal container is shattered. His new-found wholeness and mortal empathy ignites his quest to conserve the last remaining souls of the legendary beasts left within his dying world.”
Speaking more generally about the concept behind the album, The Rat Queen tells Decibel “‘The Bestiary’ is a conceptual book of beasts containing a collection of mystical creatures from a world forgotten. The last remaining souls of each have been gathered and preserved by ‘The Wizard.’ Cautionary tales of each beast and The Wizard himself are woven through the power of traditional heavy metal song and spell.”
If that lore doesn’t sell you on Castle Rat, I don’t know what will. Check it out below; US pre-orders are up via King Volume Records.
