EP REVIEW: Rituals – Demeted

Forming back in 2019, and finally releasing their debut EP, DEMETED are a four-piece from Poland that have embraced their rich heritage and culture. Behind the deathcore chugs and breakdowns there’s some beautiful lyricism that doesn’t go unnoticed.

Whispers opens the EP being part atmospheric & part eye opener for what is about to consume the next 20-minutes. Behind the keyboards, guitars and drums you have some very creepy whispering that is engulfed by a deafening wind before Evoke picks up the chaos introducing you to the band. Vocalist Piotr Kuropatwa unleashes a torrent of feral growls between his cleaner vocals on the chorus, which pair immaculately with the faint backing growls and the down tempo guitars.

Speaking of the guitars, Darek does a fantastic job being the only guitarist. The chugs are heavy, the breakdowns are solid, but buried underneath the noise are the layers of riffs and hooks he’s created that go seemingly unnoticed on a first spin of the EP. In fact, the more you listen to the songs, the more becomes noticeable to your ears. It’s the little things, like drummer Kamil Godlewski’s fills throughout the album, giving it a slightly more technical feel.

Basilisk brings the myth of a giant basilisk that lives within the catacombs of Warsaw to life, through the view of the basilisk itself. Lyrically it’s quite a sad story. As we’re peering into the perspective of the beast, we have incredible power that makes us invincible, but at the same time we’re alone as whoever gazes upon us is turned to stone. Musically it’s the most complex. Layered guitars twirl around the blast beats from Godlewski as the crippling bass from Dominik Gajewski rumbles your ear canals.

Throughout the six-track EP, DEMETED have shown exactly why they’ve risen through the Polish-core scene with their blend of metalcore & deathcore and incorporating many other elements, some in your face with the background synths on 7 Rituals & Inheritence and the many poisonous doses through walls of feedback among other songs that create an almost disturbing creation. Pair all of this with the anthemic chorus’ and the sublime cohesive work from the band as a whole unit, Rituals is a must hear EP for those who are fans of both the melodic and heavier side of metal, and a definite feature for those who like to soak up culture via blasts of face-melting mayhem.
