Greetings, Decibel readers!
Hope everyone had a great time at this year’s installment of Decibel Metal and Beer Fest, and that you’ve begun your journey to recover and prepare for the Denver edition this December.
In the meantime, here’s some black metal. And a new death metal album from Dark Descent.

Diabolizer – Murderous Revelations
Fast, brutal, mean-as-hell death metal in the style of Nile, Hate Eternal, Deicide, and Formulas-era Morbid Angel. It’s one of those cases where the cover art tells you exactly what you’re in for.

Fryktelig Støy – Indandescent
Ominous, doomy black metal from Australia. A little less weird than the stuff that normally comes from I, Voidhanger — but no less dark and menacing, in an almost orchestral way.

In the woods … – Otra
The latest from the Norwegian legends. Much like Amorphis (just the first band that comes to mind), there’s plenty of reminders of what made In the woods … a hallowed name in extreme metal circles, but it’s delivered with a modern production and shine that gives it a more accessible sense of power.

Malphas – Extinct
Speaking of black metal. Here’s the latest from Switzerland’s Malphas. Highly recommended for fans of Watain, Dark Funeral and Enthroned. But don’t be misled by those comparisons, as Malphas has plenty of tricks (including excellent piano work) that mark them out as their own singular black metal entity.

Sumerian Tombs – Age of Eternal Night
More black metal! This is some cool stuff, similar to latter-day Behemoth, but focused on less-well-trodden subject matter. Black metal for people who played Age of Empires growing up (me, that’s me).
