Five For Friday: April 4, 2025

Greetings, Decibel readers!

This week’s crop of new releases leans heavily on the well-produced, epic and theatrical side of the ledger today. So if that’s your bag, you should get really pumped for the new albums from Allegaeon, Eonian and Tómarúm. I feel like each of those entries could be the soundtrack to their own sci-fi or fantasy flick.

I’ll bring the popcorn. You can eat it though, I hate popcorn.

Allegaeon – The Ossuary Lens

A long-running technical assault unit issues its latest salvo of riffs, blasts and catchy vocal lines. Allegaeon‘s whole MO has always been to deliver the goods in terms of aggression and skill while giving audiences songs that feel like life-affirming anthems. That approach continues unabated on The Ossuary Lens.

Benediction – Ravage of Empires

An even longer-running institution returns with the first album since 2020’s Scriptures. As with bands like GraveMaster and Asphyx, you know what you’re getting into with Benediction: straightforward, grinding death metal. No frills, no gimmicks, just explosive energy and relentless power.

Eonian – Born From Ice

Meanwhile, if you’re in the mood for something epic and theatrical, I got you’re playbill right here. Eonian is a symphonic extreme metal band and Born From Ice is their first full-length album.

Tómarúm – Beyond Obsidian Euphoria

In a similar church but a different pew, Atlanta’s Tómarúm brings a towering and all-enveloping feeling to bear with their particular brand of black metal. Definitely essential listening for fans of Ne Oblivscaris and Aquilus.

Ysbrydnos – Siant Derwyddol

And now for the album I’m most excited about for this week, Siant Derwyddol comes to us from the one-man black metal outfit Ysbrydnos. The atmosphere here is everything you’d want from a properly spooky black metal release, draped in tales from Ysbyrd’s Welsh homeland. Whenever you feel like raw, dungeon-dwelling black metal has been played out, all you need to hear is something like “Derwydd Pt III The Cave Beneath The Mountain” to restore your faith once more.
