JEFF SCOTT SOTO Teams Up JOURNEY's DEEN CASTRONOVO For 'Coming Home' Video From 'The Duets Collection, Vol. 1'

Acclaimed rock vocalist Jeff Scott Soto will release his next solo project, “The Duets Collection, Vol. 1”, on October 8. For this album, Soto wanted to do a career retrospective and re-record some of his favorite songs from his storied career, but with the twist that he invited friends to join him on duets of said songs. Today, fans can get another taste of the album with the release of “Coming Home” (originally performed by Soto with SOUL SIRKUS) where he is joined by Deen Castronovo (JOURNEY).

Using the downtime from his normally relentless touring activity due to the worldwide pandemic, Soto decided to create a very special album which pays tribute to some of the classic songs he has recorded over the course of his storied career. But rather than simple re-records, he wanted to make the album something special, unique. So, not only did he re-record these songs with his musical friends Jorge Salan, Howie Simon (guitars), Leo Mancini (guitars), Tony Dickinson (bass) and Edu Cominato (drums), but he called in some of his fellow rock friends/vocalists to create a unique duets album. With the likes of Erik Mårtensson (ECLIPSE, W.E.T.), Eric Martin (MR. BIG), Johnny Gioeli (HARDLINE), Deen Castronovo (REVOLUTION SAINTS, JOURNEY), Nathan James (INGLORIOUS), Russell Allen (SYMPHONY X), Renan Zonta (ELECTRIC MOB), Dino Jelusick (TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA), Mats Levén (CANDLEMASS, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA), BJ (SPEKTRA, SOTO), and Aliro Netto (SHAMAN, QUEEN EXTRAVAGANZA), this is an amazing international affair.

The track listing alone will surely make any JSS fan excited, much less hearing the final product. Where can you get such an amazing list of singers and songs all in the same place?

Jeff says: “It was a dream to cast these voices and I am so amped for you to hear the results…”

Soto is a man that needs virtually no introduction to any discerning melodic rock fan. Jeff launched his career at the young age of 18 years old in tremendous fashion as the lead vocalist for Yngwie Malmsteen’s debut album, “Rising Force”, and the sophomore effort, “Marching Out”. That first step into the spotlight has led to a career that has seen Jeff play and work with an outstanding number of artists and genres from the AOR of EYES and TAKARA, to the hard rock and metal of TALISMAN, AXEL RUDI PELL, SOUL SIRKUS, and, of course, his time with the legendary JOURNEY. Jeff has also maintained a solo career over the past decades, while also recently joining up with the progressive metal supergroup SONS OF APOLLO.

Track listing:

METALLICA Shares Rough Mix Of 'The God That Failed' From Remastered Deluxe Box Set Of 'Black' Album

METALLICA has shared “The God That Failed (May 13th, 1991 Rough Mix)”, taken from the “Rough & Alternate Mixes” 2CD included in the remastered deluxe box set of its self-titled fifth album — also known as “The Black Album” — due on September 10 via the band’s own Blackened Recordings. Check it out below.

The Black Album is one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed records of all time. Its 1991 release not only gave METALLICA its first No. 1 album in no fewer than 10 countries, including a four-week run at No. 1 in the U.S., its unrelenting series of singles — “Enter Sandman”, “The Unforgiven”, “Nothing Else Matters”, “Wherever I May Roam” and “Sad But True” — fueled the band’s rise to stadium headlining, radio and MTV dominating household name status. The album’s reception from the press was similarly charged, building over the years from the top 10 of the 1991 Village Voice Pazz & Jop national critics poll to becoming a constant presence in the likes of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. The album’s impact and relevance continue to grow — as proven by one indisputable fact: The Black Album remains unchallenged as the best-selling album in the history of Nielsen SoundScan, outselling every release in every genre over the past 30 years.

To commemorate its 30th anniversary, the Grammy-winning, 16-times-platinum-certified Black Album is receiving its definitive re-release. Remastered for ultimate sound quality, The Black Album remaster will be available in multiple configurations including 180-gram double vinyl LP, standard CD and 3 CD expanded edition, digital, and limited-edition deluxe box set (containing the album remastered on 180-gram 2LP, a picture disc, three live LPs, 14 CDs (containing rough mixes, demos, interviews, live shows), 6 DVDs (containing outtakes, behind the scenes, official videos, live shows), a 120-page hardcover book, four tour laminates, three lithos, three guitar picks, a METALLICA lanyard, a folder with lyric sheets, and a download card).

Much more than a mere tribute album, “The Metallica Blacklist” celebrates the enduring influence of this musical milestone with one of the most ambitious projects ever conceived by the METALLICA team: An unprecedented 50+ artists spanning an unbelievably vast range of genres, generations, cultures, continents and more, each contributing a unique interpretation of their favorite Black Album cut.

“The Metallica Blacklist” offers up new dimensions of the record whose gravitational pull first drew the mainstream to METALLICA — and provides new insights into the universal and timeless appeal that kept it there: the boundary-smashing influence these 12 songs have had on fans and musicians of all stripes. “The Metallica Blacklist”‘s 53 tracks find singer songwriters, country artists, electronic and hip hop artists sharing their love of these songs alongside punk rockers, indie darlings, icons of rock, metal, world music and many, many more… and for 50+ good causes: Profits will be divided evenly between charities of the artist’s choice and METALLICA’s All Within My Hands foundation.

“The Metallica Blacklist” is a fitting and limitless homage, one that features bands who’ve shared stages with METALLICA alongside artists who are younger than the original album. It’s a truly staggering, at times mystifying assemblage of musicians, dozens of whom have little to nothing in common other than the shared passion for the music that’s united them for this album: 1 Album. 12 Songs. 53 Artists. Unlimited Possibilities.

“The Metallica Blacklist” will be available in formats including digital, four-CD and a limited-edition seven-LP vinyl pressing. Pre-orders will instantly receive multi-platinum selling recording artist, songwriter, philanthropist and trailblazer Miley Cyrus’s version of “Nothing Else Matters” featuring Andrew Watt, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, Robert Trujillo and Chad Smith, and Colombian-born rock/pop superstar, and winner of 20+ Grammy and Latin Music Grammy Awards Juanes’s interpretation of “Enter Sandman”.

All profits from “The Metallica Blacklist” will be split evenly between the All Within My Hands foundation and 50+ charities chosen by the artists who play on the album. All Within My Hands was founded by the band in 2017 as a way for the entire METALLICA family to give back to communities that have supported the band by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, and other critical local services.

Back in 2017, METALLICA announced that it was preparing deluxe remastered versions of its “…And Justice For All” (1988) and “Metallica” (1991) albums and reached out to its hardcore fans for help to get content for the new editions. “…And Justice For All” has since been reissued for its 30th anniversary in 2018.

METALLICA’s self-titled LP in 2014 became the first album to sell 16 million copies since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991.

“Metallica” was already certified 16 times platinum on December 13, 2012 by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America) for shipments in excess of 16 million copies in the U.S.

The album in 2009 surpassed SHANIA TWAIN’s 1997 record, “Come On Over”, as the best-selling CD of the SoundScan era.

“Metallica” was the first of four collaborations with producer Bob Rock, with whom the band clashed throughout the recording of the disc.

METALLICA performed “the black album” in its entirety at a number of European festivals in 2012.

THE CULT Cancels All Shows: 'It Is Apparent That The Optimism We Shared In Performing' Live In 2021 Was 'Premature'

THE CULT has scrapped all of its previously announced 2021 shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The band, which spent most of 2019 touring in celebration of the 30th anniversary of its “Sonic Temple” album, announced the cancelation in a social media post on Wednesday (August 25).

“THE CULT will regretfully be postponing all upcoming shows for the rest of the year due to the ongoing flux in the world while we continue to adjust to the ‘new normal’,” the statement reads.

“Our shows are a communal space where we share the celebration of live music. It is apparent that the optimism we shared in the performing of live shows for 2021 was premature. We refuse to put a single fan, whom we love and respect in harms way.

“Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all in the Spring of 2022.”

This past April, THE CULT guitarist Billy Duffy spoke to Tone-Talk about the progress of the recording sessions for the band’s new album. The follow-up to 2016’s “Hidden City” is being helmed by producer Tom Dalgety, who has previously worked with GHOST and ROYAL BLOOD, among others.

“We’ve been digging away at that over the last year and a half,” Billy said. “We’re working with a great young English producer called Tom Dalgety. And, obviously, with the circumstances of the last year or so, it’s been a little challenging. But we’re making some progress.

“The philosophy in THE CULT camp, really, is about quality, not quantity,” Duffy explained. “We don’t just need to keep putting out records for the sake of it. Without being ridiculous, we wanna, within a certain realistic time frame, make sure that the records that we put out are as good as they can be. So sometimes that takes a bit longer. And that’s kind of where we’re at.”

He reiterated: “We’re well into the process of the new CULT album.”

Speaking about THE CULT’s songwriting approach this time around, Billy said: “One of the things about THE CULT, I think, that may be worth mentioning is it’s always been a collaborative creative effort between me and Ian [Astbury, vocals]. And as you can imagine, like any kind of situation, there’s pushing and pulling, and Ian wants to go a certain direction, and I might resist, or I might wanna go a certain direction. And that tension creates [THE CULT sound]. It’s not like Ian writes ‘Ian songs’ and Billy writes ‘Billy songs,’ and we record them as THE CULT. There are no ‘Ian songs’ or ‘Billy songs’ — there are Ian and Billy songs together. And over the time, there’s a bit of a creative — it’s not always tension; I don’t mean that in a bad way. That’s what makes it good. It’s that blend. We sort of respect each other to the extent that I think there’s a trust there, and I think that, after this many years together, and a few years apart, I think we trust each other and respect each other enough.

“I think it’s healthy to have creative tension,” he continued. “There’s nothing worse than walking into a room where nobody’s got any ideas. I’d rather have an argument about something creative than to have nothing, just the sound of crickets: ‘All right. What are we gonna do now?’

“We see things very differently,” Billy admitted. “In a lot of ways, we’re very alike. Our birthdays are one year and two days apart. So we’re both Taureans. Our birthdays are both coming up very soon. We’re very alike in a lot of ways and very different in a lot of ways.”

“Hidden City” was released in February 2016 via Cooking Vinyl. The follow-up to 2012’s “Choice Of Weapon” was written by Astbury and Duffy and was produced by Bob Rock, who has previously worked with METALLICA and MÖTLEY CRÜE.

In May 2020, it was announced that THE CULT had inked a deal with Black Hill Records.

The aforementioned “Sonic Temple” album catapulted THE CULT into superstar status and remains their most commercially successful release. It has sold over 1.5 million copies in the U.S. alone and was certified platinum in 1990. It made it to No. 10 on the Billboard charts, and several of the album’s songs remain rock-radio staples to this day.

METALLICA Donates $50,000 To Haiti Earthquake Relief

METALLICA’s All Within My Hands foundation has donated $50,000 to Direct Relief’s Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

Commented All Within My Hands: “The devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake that rocked the nation of Haiti on August 14 has left at least 2,207 people dead, more than 12,200 injured, and over 50,000 homes destroyed. Loved ones remain missing, with little comfort taken as bodies are found. Yet some hope miraculously endures as survivors are discovered alive in the ruin, like the 20 adults and four children — all reported missing — who were recovered and immediately transported to the hospital on Sunday.

“Direct Relief has supported Haitians for nearly 40 years, and this history of work is precisely why All Within My Hands partners with Direct Relief when it comes to disaster relief.

Direct Relief provides emergency assistance after natural disasters around the globe. In Haiti, the nonprofit humanitarian medical organization, based in Santa Barbara, California, is working with a larger coalition of responders, and has begun shipping and equipping prescription drugs, IV solutions, medical backpacks, emergency health kits, and wound care items to responding hospitals in Haiti.

All Within My Hands is a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation established in 2017 as a way for the METALLICA family to give back to communities that have supported the band. Just in 2020, AWMH donated $645,000 to COVID-19-related relief funds including Feeding America, Direct Relief, as well as to charities assisting those in the entertainment and hospitality industries suddenly without work. More recently, the foundation donated $350,000 to aid those affected by the West Coast wildfires. Finally, the foundation’s Metallica Scholars Initiative is now in its third year and has fundamentally improved the earning potential for students who become Metallica Scholars.

METALLICA and All Within My Hands are committed to running an organization of the highest integrity where expenses are kept to a minimum and are paid for entirely by the band, the board, and friends who have worked with the band over many years and are excited to help in this mission. As always, 100% of proceeds from last November’s “Helping Hands” event — tickets, fees and auction items — went directly to help those in need, with METALLICA and the foundation covering all production costs and expenses.

EVERGREY Signs With NAPALM RECORDS

Napalm Records has announced the signing of Swedish progressive metal juggernauts EVERGREY.

EVERGREY is Gothenburg’s finest exports, having been commanding the scene for over 25 years and have released twelve full-length records to date — starting with their blistering debut “The Dark Discovery” in 1998. Their latest high-quality offering, the critically acclaimed “Escape Of The Phoenix” (No. 12 on German album chart), was unveiled in early 2021, proving the inimitable ability of the five-piece to harmoniously weave dark lyricism with different shades of heaviness and musical influences. Over the course of time, EVERGREY remarkably managed to build its very own powerful yet emotional sound that reaches the listener deep in their core and creates an exceptional experience with every note.

EVERGREY comments on the signing with Napalm Records: “We are very excited to announce that EVERGREY signed with Napalm Records! Given the success of our recent albums, we feel certain that Napalm have the power that will bring us to the next level. We have lots of exciting news to share soon so stay tuned.”

EVERGREY is currently working on new music.

Earlier this year, EVERGREY vocalist/guitarist Tom S. Englund told Metal Talk about the band’s plans for the future: “I guess if this [pandemic] drags out for much longer, we will make another album and we will tour on two albums. I think that is the reality of it, but we have a tour that we have postponed three times already and now it is set to start on the 8th of October. But… I don’t think it is realistic to think we could do five weeks in Europe and the UK in October. I think it is too early, but I don’t wish for anything more, to be honest, because it is heartwrenching to not be able to get an immediate reaction from your fans and that is why you play music.”

EVERGREY is:

Tom S. Englund – vocals, guitars
Henrik Danhage – guitars
Rikard Zander – keys
Jonas Ekdahl – drums
Johan Niemann – bass

Dancing Into Oblivion – WHITE STONES

Full credit to Martin Mendez. Best known as bassist with OPETH since 1997, the Barcelona-based Uruguayan could conceivably have swerved the side-project route altogether and been content with membership in one of the most revered bands on the planet. Instead, he launched WHITE STONES with excellent debut album 2020’s “Kuarahy”, establishing a crystal-clear blueprint for gnarly, old-school death metal with a pronounced, and perhaps inevitable, progressive streak. The latter does, of course, lead to certain moments on “Dancing Into Oblivion” faintly echoing the early works of Mendez’s alma mater, but the band’s second observation is distinctive enough in its own right to briskly club those comparisons away.

Sonically rooted in the pristine grime of upper-level underground metal, WHITE STONES clearly scratches an old-school itch for everyone involved. An opening brace of “New Age Of Dark” and “Chain Of Command” showcases a subtle upgrade for the sound revealed on “Kuarahy”. Those all-important shades of MORBID ANGEL and PESTILENCE are still clearly perceptible, but there is a wonkiness and mischievousness underpinning the riffs and arrangements, with intermittent bursts of refined melody enhancing the sum of those parts. Vocalist Eloi Boucherie is a commanding presence, too: audibly schooled in the classics, but with his own distinct tone, he brings fresh drama and danger with every successive growl.

WHITE STONES truly come into their own on this album’s lengthy centerpiece, “Iron Titans”: nine minutes of fervently progressive and ruthlessly dark extremity, it’s the first definitive evidence that Mendez’s singular vision will transcend the familiarity of its musical roots. Likewise, “To Lie or to Die” is as much an exercise in warped, dissonant prog as it is a death metal tune, with its underlying Krautrock clatter and schizophrenic structure. “Freedom in Captivity” is even more startling. From its ululating, insouciant and breezily psychedelic intro, which mutates into the lurching, tumbling tech-death that erupts thereafter, it’s progressive death metal of some description, but Martin Mendez’s skill as a songwriter and virtuoso musician deserve a less reductive reputation. Although a teensy bit slender at 36 minutes, “Dancing Into Oblivion” is both original and substantial, while also hinting at more extravagant and out-there triumphs to come.

LIMP BIZKIT Cancels All 2021 Dates, Promises New Music 'Very Soon'

LIMP BIZKIT has canceled all of its previously announced live appearances for 2021. The group shared the news less than a month after scrapping more than half a dozen summer shows, explaining in a statement that it was doing so “out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of the band, crew and most of all the fans.”

Earlier today (Wednesday, August 25), LIMP BIZKIT shared the following statement via Instagram Story: “To be more clear, as some promoters are a bit behind on keeping you updated. All of our scheduled performances were canceled weeks ago (yes, we are all fine, thank you). New songs will begin to leak, one after the other in rapid succession very soon. Soon thereafter, our new album will be released.”

LIMP BIZKIT was scheduled to appear at several festivals this summer and fall, including Aftershock, Blue Ridge, Rebel Rock and Rocklahoma.

A few days after the summer 2021 shows were called off, LIMP BIZKIT frontman Fred Durst told Billboard about the decision: “In short, the system is still very flawed. Even if the performers, crews, staff, and promoters do their best to ensure safety on and behind the stage, that doesn’t ensure the safety of the audience as a whole. We are all in this together, and we all — individually and as a whole — have to make our best efforts to be as responsible and proactive as possible moving forward to combat and stop spreading COVID.”

Durst also denied that there was a specific incident that prompted him and his bandmates to pull the plug on the trek, saying it was “just perception.”

LIMP BIZKIT’s tour was called off a day after the band scrapped its concert at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, New Jersey about an hour before the show was scheduled to begin. No reason for the Stone Pony cancelation was given.

Durst made headlines last month when he debuted his new look at the band’s July 29 concert at Metro in Chicago, with the frontman now sporting wavy salt-and-pepper locks accompanied by a horseshoe-style mustache. LIMP BIZKIT also debuted a new song at the event, titled “Dad Vibes”.

LIMP BIZKIT has not released a new studio album since 2011’s “Gold Cobra”, although the band has spent a lot of time writing and recording music over the past decade.

CHUCK BILLY: Why TESTAMENT Has Not Toured With METALLICA

During an appearance on a recent episode of “The Jasta Show”, hosted by HATEBREED frontman Jamey Jasta, TESTAMENT singer Chuck Billy lamented the fact that his band has yet to do a proper tour with METALLICA even though the two groups have known each other for more than three decades.

“Whenever I’m asked, ‘What is the one band you wish you can play with?’, it’s always METALLICA,” Chuck said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET. “It’s, like, we grew up with these guys [in] the same era, but we never went on tour [with them]. I think a few years ago, we did three shows in Germany [with them] on a festival. It was funny, ’cause our band walked in and their band was walking, and we all kind of met in this hallway. And [we were], like, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ It was a like old friends seeing each other. I think it was James [Hetfield] or Lars [Ulrich], they said, ‘Oh my God. Look at you guys. You guys all still got your hair. You guys are big.’ ‘Cause Steve [DiGiorgio, TESTAMENT bassist] and Gene [Hoglan, TESTAMENT drummer] are all six-[foot]-two, six-[foot]-three. But it was great seeing ’em. And we’re actually playing [at the] Aftershock [festival in Sacramento], if that happens, in October. They’re kicking off four nights there, and we’re kicking off the first night with them. So that’ll be good.”

Billy went on to express his hope that TESTAMENT could still properly share the stage with METALLICA. “It would be great,” he said. “And who knows? Maybe one day. Even the [San Francisco] Bay Area shows, when they do those special shows, EXODUS played, DEATH ANGEL played — a lot of people got to play. I don’t know. I do know, because Eric [Peterson, TESTAMENT guitarist] — I don’t know if you know the story — Eric actually married Kirk’s [Hammett, METALLICA guitarist] ex when they split up. So I don’t know if that has something [to do with it] — [a] deep down underlying reason. That’s the only thing [we can think of]. We’re, like, ‘What is it, Eric? What’d you do to us? Why did you date her? Now we can’t play with METALLICA.’ [Laughs]”

Back in 2017, Hetfield was asked in an interview with Elliott Fullam of Little Punk People to name his favorite thrash bands that are not part of the so-called “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal (METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX). James said: “Oh, my God! There’s tons of them. Well, EXODUS for sure. We grew up with those guys in the [San Francisco] Bay Area. Oh, and we stole their guitar player; that too. [Laughs] But, yeah, I think they’re great. TESTAMENT… A lot of bands in the Bay Area, a lot of thrash stuff.”

TESTAMENT’s “The Bay Strikes Back Tour” with EXODUS and DEATH ANGEL will kick off on October 6 at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California and make stops in Austin, New York, and Detroit before concluding on November 27 at The Fox in Oakland.
